THE OUTCAST is one of my favorite films from director William Witney. Later in the month, GRIT will be showing Witney's SANTA FE PASSAGE with John Payne and Rod Cameron. It's another good one.

I believe the reindeer roundup and other scenes came from Republic's 1938 "Call of the Yukon" with Richard Arlen, Beverly Roberts, Lyle Talbot and Mala. Scenes from this film were also used in Republic's 1953 serial "Canadian Mounties vs. Atomic Invaders".

HONEYCHILE has a great stunt-filled climax with Judy and Eddie Foy Jr. in a wagon chase. I believe OKLAHOMA ANNIE is the film where longtime Republic bad guy Roy Barcroft has a funny confrontation with Judy in the finale.

I saw ALIAS JESSE JAMES at a packed Saturday matinee and the crowd response to each cameo was huge. A cherished memory of my moviegoing days of the fifties and sixties.

These were recently shown on TCM and the picture quality was incredible. Both very entertaining films.

A great post, Beckford! And I am in total agreement on all of the 5 wonderful ladies here. I always thought that Universal left money on the table with Nell O'Day. A western series with Nell as the lead would have been a game changer at the time. Betty Miles was another actress who only did a...

My #1 Christmas gift wish would be a Blu-ray release of this from Paramount or a licensed release from another company.

A couple more Republic '50s movies have been released by ViaVision of Australia. SEA OF LOST SHIPS and A PERILOUS JOURNEY are put of a five disc set. I ordered this set from Import CDs and was very happy with the films. They look fine but I wish they were available on Blu-ray. However, it...

MACKINTOSH & T.J. was one of the last movies shown at a local drive-in theatre in 1975 before it closed down. It was the main feature paired with Charles Bronson's BREAKOUT film. I really loved it then and can't wait for the Blu-ray. I didn't watch its recent showing on the INSP channel because...

I really hope that more of these restored Republic films make it to a Blu-ray or DVD release someday. I've purchased them all from iTunes or Amazon and they look fabulous. HELLFIRE, BELLS OF CORONADO, FAIR WIND TO JAVA and B/W films like THE PHANTOM SPEAKS, ANGEL ON THE AMAZON and the feature...

Wanted to post here that Roy Rogers' BELLS OF CORONADO (1950, William Witney) is now available to rent or purchase on Amazon Prime or iTunes. It looks gorgeous and sure beats the old DVD. Also, for Republic serial fans, the 1966 feature version of THE CRIMSON GHOST is available under the title...

There is a nice looking copy of JESSE JAMES AT BAY on Amazon Prime. It's listed as being from Paramount who has made available a lot of other Republic films. It's a re-release print as it starts with the Republic eagle rather than the bell tower and at the end there's an obvious deletion of the...

My favorite Bob Steele film is 1941's THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY. One of Republic's best crime films (not a western) that was reworked into an actual western in 1949...Bill Elliott's THE LAST BANDIT. Milburn Stone co-stars and it's directed by Joe Kane. This is another Republic I'd love to see...

Flashgear….Thanks so much for posting those ads. They are wonderful to see the double features and the ad layout. If I could get hold of a time machine... My main moviegoing era was between 1958 and the early 70s so I have a lot of great memories but the late 40s up through the mid 50s was...

I'm with you on jungle serials. Heck, I even like Republic's rather threadbare JUNGLE DRUMS OF AFRICA. People are always saying it's Republic's worst serial but I enjoyed it. I mean it's got Clayton Moore & Phyllis Coates...c'mon. You are right about Mike Schlesinger and his work at Sony. I...

An excellent copy of the Columbia short pictured above, MIDNIGHT BLUNDERS with Monte Collins & Tom Kennedy is available on Sony's ICONS OF HORROR COLLECTION: SAM KATZMAN. This is one of the sets produced by one very own HTF poster "Cadavra". This standard DVD set is one of my favorites. It...

Amazon Prime has added 3 late '40s color westerns just recently. SUSANNA PASS with Roy Rogers & Dale Evans has a 67 minute runtime. I've spot checked the film and it definitely is not a restored print. Color is OK but looks like it might come from a 16mm print. The opening titles for one of...

Bert, I also am a big fan of SPOILERS OF THE PLAINS which is one of my favorite Rogers-Witney films along with EYES OF TEXAS, NIGHTTIME IN NEVADA and BELLS OF SAN ANGELO. Other studios had a few great candidates in establishing a female B-western star. The main one who comes to mind was Nell...

Plus both "The Red Rider" and "The Vanishing Shadow" feature the great Richard Cramer in supporting roles. That's Cramer in my avatar as Joe Portos in the Buck Jones serial. Cramer, however steals the show in "The Vanishing Shadow" as Walter Miller's chief goon, Dorgon. His line readings always...

Lorna Gray (as Adrian Booth) is terrific in Republic's VALLEY OF THE ZOMBIES. Her banter with Robert Livingston is reminiscent of a B-movie version of "The Thin Man". I think this is one of the Republic films that has been restored by Paramount and will hopefully see some sort of Blu-ray or DVD...
