UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

From what I have seen so far it is very much possible that you will be most happy with the new Blu-ray of Liberty Valance. As for old movies and HDR I agree on modern panels and to a degree even in projection. I use a video processor that can make HDR look very much like 4k 10Bit SDR as that is...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

I think that we have not heard as much from other studios either but the lack of communication is no problem as long as a studio delivers. Compare that to Paramount who speak up about To Catch a Thief and The Godfather and what they say very much reminds me of the old saying that when you find...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

This is the most important question to me - wouldn't they be just as happy? I think the answer is yes. We could also test this hypothesis by looking for people who prefer Paramount releases over those from Sony or Warner Archive releases. So far I have yet to find people expressing that opinion.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

It is honorable of you to say that but the original Patton disc is no Liberty Valance where you may watch a segment that looks pretty much OK if you do not pay attention. Or to put it another way: If your eyes, display or taste prevent you from seeing it is very very wrong why would I trust you...

Martin Liebman gave Patton 5 out of 5 for video quality - the wax version: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Patton-Blu-ray/679/#Review As for his display one can always sit closer to a smaller screen - helps a lot. In any case he obviously has not changed his ways to a significant degree as he...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

Indeed the overriding theme seems to be changes must be made and grain cannot be left alone one way or another. Doing less seems like a good way to get away from the dark side and it is probably cheaper than what they currently do.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

That sharpening in My Fair Lady works very well indeed and I am certainly not advocating to do away with all sharpening. Like salt however it is a very tricky thing - once you add too much one cannot take it away as easily as it is to add a bit more later. I will go with another try at what...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

I am reading Glenn when I want to know something about the movie, not for his assessment of picture quality. He is a very good and unique writer.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

Very well said, it is a missed opportunity. Unfortunately one still has to purchase the UHD to get the new Blu-ray that it is missing almost nothing with regard to detail compared to the UHD and from what I can see the best current home video version. As for the grain to me the caps look like...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

Obviously if that infomation would be on all existing discs many would still look bad but with that information we might be able to find out why that is the case and also see some patterns. On the other hand there are very good releases out there where we do not know anything about that release...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

I would love to have a few specifics for each release, something like this: scan / telecine and resolution ip/OCN/fine grain/print performed at company in location cleanup / dust busting etc. done with xy software by color grading by grading based on IB Tech prints / notes etc. HDR grade by...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

Thanks for clearing that up about My Fair Lady and glad that CBS rose to the occasion. I would still say that The Ten Commandments could have ended up like The Godfather but it didn't so I would at least call it a good sign that they respected the work of Ron Smith.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

No harm in that but with more recent titles like The Court Jester, My Fair Lady or The Ten Commandments we have examples of excellent work from Paramount. They have done it before and can do it again for future releases. Disney has come forward giving us an explanation why they thought they...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

I would prefer a certain degree of carelessness and/or budget consciousness to wanton destruction as this would mean there is some hope. If everything is as intended then this would be really depressing. It would be great to have a meeting with the people who work on these releases in order to...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

A bunch of them flew under the radar, I also remember that the Forrest Gump was uneven and actually similar to Liberty Valance in that regard. Not as bad as Grease but still a missed opportunity.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

These caps look like they may have wanted to do the right thing but they simply did not know how to go about it - this is no Grease or To Catch A Thief.. So I am in favor of building a bridge for them that they can cross but it should definitely involve the implementation of some proper...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

It has been pointed out before that some rather important people at Paramount seem to have a hatred for grain and letting movies look like they do: https://www.hometheaterforum.com/community/threads/a-few-words-about-tm-to-catch-a-thief-redux-in-blu-ray.366547/page-8#post-4865904 the first...

Very true, people who are discerning also see it on an OLED, LCD TV or computer monitor. It just so happens that many discerning people tend to have front projection systems and often separate rooms for watching movies. The one nice thing is that on a bigger screen one can get a lot closer...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

I have already spoken out about the Blu-ray but not too many seemed interested back then. I will probably try to get a look at the UHD release anyway but I do not want to buy it. Hopefully I will be able to rent it as I would not want to support Paramount's way of "restoring" movies with a...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance -- in 4k UHD

Oh no, looks like those at Paramount who think that movies should look pretty in a certain twisted and misguided way have gone on a rampage. We can be lucky that so far they only messed up unimportant movies by unknown directors like The Godfather, To Catch a Thief or The Man Who Shot Liberty...
