Would be interesting to see sales number for each month and how forum tastes reflect sales numbers. Personally I am not particularly excited about the announcements this month but after getting Land of the Pharaohs, Helen of Troy and Angel Face earlier in the year I won't complain!

Angel Face and Land of the Pharaohs in the same month? For me that's the best month ever for Warner Archive releases!

Great find, indeed I have never seen a movie before with color by Technirama - or a movie shot in Pavavision. And not just any Pavavision - it was Super Pavavision 70!

John Paul Jones is another Technirama production from 1959 where we could use a decent Blu-ray and where Warner also holds the rights. Another European production and also largely forgotten today. The first really big production by Samuel Bronston who would then movie on to bigger things with...

That is true and none of the best looking 65mm productions from Warner even made it to Blu-ray in the quality they deserve so for these movies they have some catching up to do at Warner.

That is a nice list! I do not really feel like putting up a list as mine has been pretty static for the last 10 years and I have very little hope that we will even see one title from that list next year. I think it has been like that since Ben-Hur (1959) was released.

If we are talking about Warner Archive releases I would agree that we have very little to complain about. There will however be many more to choose from when it comes to regular Warner releases - maybe he meant those?

It does not really transcend the play for most of its runtime and it probably was not meant to but for me it does not work that well as an adventuire movie / historical epic. If it gets released I am happy for people who like like to see it on Blu-ray but I would prefer any of the others to be...

It cannot be overstated that the sheer numbers and technical quality of releases of the Warner Archive has been outstanding. As for the selection of titles my biggest favorites have not been released so far but I am realistic enough to see that I probably have an expensive / unpopular taste in...

I would think that overall musical (and horror) aficionados fared VERY well with the Warner Archive Blu-ray releases. Something that cannot be said to the same degree for people who like silent movies or historical/epic/biblical movies...

You're slipping Ed, how could you not mention the magnificent Helen? ;) Also waiting for THE PRODIGAL and of course LAND OF THE PHARAOHS for some time now so it would be nice if Warner could attend to at least one of them. Looks to me like money better spent than what was used to bring us...

Probably the old DVD master. Easily behind Land of the Pharaohs, Helen of Troy and The Prodigal when it comes to unreleased ancient epics I'd want from Warner but I still hope it will get a new master at some point that will also lead to a Blu-ray release.

I could see The King and I as a worthier winner but The Ten Commandments? I consider it a very entertaining movie but not a great one. I would rather have seen The Searchers take it or Giant with The Searchers being my favorite that year.

A release of a historical / ancient time movie, maybe even an epic one? You got to be kidding :) To my recollection the only title that would qualify a bit from the last years would be The Colossus of Rhodes that had already been released in a better version in Europe. Yeah we get it Warner...

From time to time Warner tries to find a title that nobody ever asked for to shake things up a little. I think that with Tennessee Johnson they may have found it.

Unfortunately it looks quite obvious that The Sea Hawk didn't sell that well after all.

Probably does not help that it's a swashbuckler, they seem to do almost as badly as historical epics.

I did not know that but it goes to show that some movies age a lot better than others, I look forward to all three of them.

I can see where you're coming from but outside of our little circle there is probably little difference to people between Gunga Din, Goodbye Mr. Chips (1939), Blood on the Moon, Ice Pirates or Reflections in a Golden Eye which means that all 5 may sell in similar numbers. On a personal level I...

I have a bit of an issue when sometimes it sounds as if Warner has yet to release dozens of movies of the status of GWTW, Oz or Ben-Hur (1959). Other than that I love many old movies and often find more obscure titles or commercial failures at least as interesting as the usual suspects.

I just lost a little bit of respect for you, this is sad. OK, just kidding there :D Nothing wrong with liking movies that not everybody else likes but it is always good advice to not elevate movies to classic status just because of a personal preference. I fear that currently not too many...

Oh no, Goodbye Mr. Chips is one of those movies where I continue to forget that the later version is not the only one out there. Probably because there is no good way to see the original so I would concur with your choice of putting it on the list. Lots of good movies on that list and some that...

Maybe great classics could also be translated with "old movies I'd like to see on Blu-ray" :) Goodbye Mr. Chips to me is an OK older musical but a great classic? I would love to see most of the large format movies that Warner hasn't released yet on Blu-ray and a number of historical epics, too...

Indeed I always wonder why people mix that up and have rather funny hopes that for example Criterion should get some movie that is ultra expensive to restore and often not even that popular because "they would do a great job restoring it" or something to that effect. No they won't - they will...

I completely agree, this was not to put Kino down but to show what an outstanding job Warner is doing when it comes to the technical aspects of their releases. Entitlement is an issue but so are the many posts that follow such a post like the one from Rick Bond. Warners' choices may not be mine but they release their titles in good or very good quality which is a lot more than I can say about recent releases from Kino for movies that I was really...

While they may not be classics in the sense of Gone With the Wind or The Wizard of Oz I would definitely call them above average classic titles that to my pleasant surprise are not mostly B horror fare or some other popular niche.

Same here, which is why I asked. Hard to believe but I never watched it in its entirety as I always wanted my first viewing to be memorable and for such a movie a certain amount of resolution is needed to bring out the visual splendor to better effect. I still hope that I'll see it soon in...
