439 “Cheyennes” Someone is gun running to renegade Cheyennes (again). I see a pattern in season finales: they usually involves a settler’s house being attacked by Native Americans. This episode was okay, but these kinds of stories are all starting to run together.

438 “Blue Horse” – Matt and Chester are riding back to Dodge with a prisoner. They encounter some Calvary looking for an Indian Chief named Blue Horse. Then Matt falls off his horse for no apparent reason and injures himself. Chester rides for Dodge. Matt is left alone with the prisoner. What I...

437 “The Constable” Once again, business owners are upset at Matt for jailing some wild cowhands who come in from a drive. Their herd boss complains to the town leaders that he’ll take his heard elsewhere. Dillon calls the town leaders fools, who would rather see bloodshed if it means a dollar...

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

436 “Print Asper” – A swindling lawyer sets up a tragic chain of events between a father and two sons. It was okay, but once this kind of plot gets set in motion, there really is only one ending for it, and that ending became clear way too early in the show for me. The bar keep only appeared...

435 “There Never Was A Horse” – A super-fast gunfighter comes to Dodge with an eye on Dillon. This is a superb one. I won’t spoil anything, except to say I hadn’t seen a fast draw scene end like this one since A very happy Gunsmoke fan here, to say the least. My wife was in my office and...

434 “The Choice” A young gunfighter, really fast, comes to Dodge looking for work. I don’t want to spoil this one because it’s a good one. Nice script, nice performances, and some new setups around Dodge leading to more fine cinematography.

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

433 – “Buffalo Hunter” A buffalo skinner was killed cooking lead in a pan to make bullets for his boss. Dillon thinks the skinner’s face was pushed down into the boiling lead. Tough story. Some nice cinematography in this episode.

432 “Change of Heart” Two brothers fight over one of them wanting to marry a saloon girl. But the fight turns out to be about a whole lot more. Oh, the things we do for love. At the top of the episode Kitty tells one of her employees that Matt is her best friend in the world. A sweet scene.

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

431 “Murder Warrant” The opening five minutes of this episode are remarkable to me as they occur in real time. A man shot in the shoulder climbs the steps to Doc’s office and Doc removes the bullet without any time jumps. I enjoyed it a lot. As did I enjoy this episode. It might strain credulity...

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

430 “White Renegade” A white man is murdering people with buffalo rifles. Matt sets out by himself after the man, but gets thrown from his horse. This was a good episode about a renegade without a culture. I particularly appreciated that it gave equal time to native Americans and their just...

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

429 “Fawn” A white woman captured by the Comanche was allowed to leave with a young Indian girl, her half-Cheyenne daughter. Dillon looks after them until the affair turns into a love triangle. This would have been another tepid episode if not for a heartwarming performance by Peggy Stewart.

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

428 “Wind” Dillon must deal with colluding gamblers at the Long Branch. Another so-so episode. But a nice quote from Matt: “I don’t believe in luck. I’d have been dead along time ago if I did.” Chester (above) said: “Freshly washed underwear sure smells good, don’t it?”

Nice to come back and see this thread thriving. 427 “The F.U.” An ordinary Joe spots the dealer cheating at cards, calls him out, but has no gun. The dealer swears he’ll kill him, then the man gets shot in the back on Front street and dies. Dillon takes a train to track the suspect...

Sorry to say I must get out of Dodge for a few days once again. Sadly my mother-in-law passed and I am headed back to Hollywood for the funeral. This doesn't figure to be as fun a trip as the last one. See you on my return. In the meantime I'll just leave Chester and Matt star gazing.

426 “The Coward” An assassin mistakes another man for Dillon and shoots him in the back. The man dies. This episode has some nice twists in it. But these episodes about killing Dillon continue to wear thin. Nice touch, Kitty, with needle and thread, mending a shirt on Pence.

425 “The Bear” Denver Pyle marries a woman and two of his ranch hands take exception to it. One of those hands is a very young Russell Johnson. Kitty catches the bouquet at a wedding. Matt asks what she’s going to do with it, she giggles and says, “Plant it, I guess.” The episode is...

424 “Doc Quits” Matt goes away for a week and comes back to find a new doctor in Dodge, giving Doc Adams competition. Doc finally quits when the town prefers the new practitioner. I like episodes about Doc, but this one was a bit contrived for me at the end.

My brother-in-law still gets messages from appreciative fans to this day. I told him what you said. He said you are very welcome, but that he gets way more credit for that than he deserves, that there are several other members of this forum who deserve credit, too. As well as a ton of folks at...

Thank you. I was lucky enough to watch them film The Mandalorian and get a tour of Lucasfilm and the ranch. It's likely Alan's last gig before retirement, so I'm grateful he invited me out. He said he's watching the Gunsmoke episodes I recommend. :) 422 “Kitty’s Rebellion” – A young dude from...

421 “Jayhawkers” This episode achieves the rare feat of scope and intimacy. Usually these two things work at cross purposes, but this gem of an episode gives us intimate portraits and the scope of a real cattle drive. I must say the location shooting is impressive. Not a lot smacks of stock...

Back from Hollywood. I told my brother-in-law Carabimero (Alan) I was trying to outdo his posting run on Hawaii Five O. ;-) He says hello to Doug, Jeff and Randall. 420 “Love of a Good Woman” Jacqueline Scott guest stars as an ex-Civil War nurse. This is yet another episode dealing with someone...

419 “Passive Resistance” A couple of bully ranchers resent and old sheep farmer and go out and shoot all his sheep and threaten to shoot his dog if the old man doesn’t hold it back. This is a nice episode. Hard to watch in some ways because it’s so authentic and truthful. Wish I had the...

418 “Marshal Proudfoot” Chester’s been writing his Uncle (Dabbs Greer), claiming he’s the marshal of Dodge and Dillon is his assistant. Problem is, his uncle shows up. This episode had a couple of laugh-out-loud moments for me, and a very sweet moment at the end when Matt tells Chester that...

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

417 “Young Love” A disgruntled cowhand kills his old boss and tries to set up an alibi to fool Dillon. Another episode as good as far as it goes, but also another episode no greater than the sum of its parts. A little too pat for me, once again.

    Wanted: GUNSMOKE (CBS/1955-1975)

416 “Gypsum Hill Feud” – This is a good enough episode I suppose, except 90% of the interest and suspense was ruined by my knowing the title beforehand. This is the third time this has happened (the episode title spoiling the plot). Broadcast viewers generally never know the titles of these...

415 “Snakebite” Two men ride into Dodge. One of them shoots a dog that was nipping at the heels of his horse. “A fella oughtta bury his own dog,” says its owner, when he finds Chester burying it. Sweet scene between Poney Thompson (Andy Clyde) and Chester. There’s also a scene when Dillon...

414 “Robber Bridegroom” - A man holds up a stage for the money but is smitten with one of the passengers and kidnaps her at gunpoint. An okay episode. I particularly liked Dillon's solution in the last ten seconds. If you’re a romantic, check it out.
