They just did the covid crawl again. The testing results were for all tests through 7/16, so it could be multiple tests on the same individuals.

Enjoying watching the Dodgers vs Diamondbacks in the first pre-season game of the resumed MLB season. They have cutouts of fans occupying the seats behind home plate at Dodger Stadium and they are piping in appropriate crowd noises, similar to laugh tracks on old sitcoms. The main reason we...

Is it time to talk about coronavirus?

Ok, with a little more research, I was able to localize things to Florida. In 2017, roughly 15 people per 100k died annually in a car crash in Florida, so about 0.04 per day per 100k. Current Covid19 death rate for Florida is 0.49 per day per 100k. So you are about 12 times more likely to die...

Leaving out the Disneyworld aspect, since I have no local statistics, you are about an order of magnitude more likely to die of Covid19 than an auto accident. (2016 ~37000 auto fatalities in 12 months vs 2020 ~140,000 Covid19 fatalities in 4 months. US numbers.)

Plus the overall case rate early on was so dominated by the tri-state area that when they were coming down from their big spike it made it look like the whole country was improving. In reality, the other places were just earlier in the curve than the tri-state area. If you successfully flatten...

Is it time to talk about coronavirus?

It’s been a perfect storm. Right in denial for President’s re-election hopes. Left in denial because they support the reasoning behind the recent waves of mass protest. But the virus doesn’t care and it’s expansion is inevitable when both sides of the political spectrum are in denial.

Oxford wasn’t starting from scratch. They’ve been working on a Malaria vaccine for many years and their Covid19 vaccine is based on that one. That vaccine had already passed phase 1 so their Covid vaccine had a head start. Actually helps to read the articles, you know (see post 1918).

Is it time to talk about coronavirus?

I posted about the Oxford vaccine study several pages back. They have already passed phase 1 (safe in humans) and phase 2 (effective in monkeys). They are starting phase 3 which is large human trials (hundreds to thousands). They are not exposing people on purpose but they are testing on...

Also saw a poll where 72% of Florida residents were against reopening too soon. Doesn’t seem to be slowing down their governor though. Another poll showed that only 12% of the US population thought mitigation measures had gone too far. Those protestors and those backing them are truly taking...

Is it time to talk about coronavirus?

See the article Mark Booth posted in post 1735 for a good explanation of why the ventilator success rate may be so low. Covid19 patients are like climbers on top of Everest without supplementary oxygen, many at pretty dire hypoxia levels before they go to the hospital. If they get to the...

@Carlo Medina My wife has been doing the shopping lately (after she read the male/female death statistics); once a week on Sunday mornings. For the last two trips, there has been toilet paper in stock. Last week Charmin plus generics. This week Cottonelle plus generics. She won’t be going...

Interesting study out of Stanford reported this morning. Santa Clara County had just over 1000 confirmed Covid19 cases as of the first week of April. Stanford administered 3300 antibody tests to a random sampling of the Santa Clara population. Their results show that the actual number of...

Sad to hear about John Prine passing away from Covid19. He was one of my favorite folk musicians. When I heard he was infected last week, I was sort of expecting this, since he had previously survived lung cancer. I’ll pour some wine and listen to some of his tunes tonight in his honor.

Is it time to talk about coronavirus?

We have examples from the 1918 flu pandemic of places where they took the right steps early recovering economically more quickly than those that didn’t. Of course it’s a different world now and with today’s ease of travel, we could all recover at nearly the same economic rate (just a question...
