I'm gonna post THIS LINK here in case it's a help to someone.
I'm not sure if there's much useful/good information here, but some of it seems legit and common sense.
These Things Are Blocking Your Home's WIFI Signal
And the bump reminds me to report that we are getting excellent coverage out on our back deck as well as throughout the house.
I think my work here is done and I can't thank you all enough for walking along with me on this PITA journey! :D
The official motto of this thread: 5% math and 95%...
Thanks, John for explaining that.
So the main router transmits wifi and the secondary unit does the very same thing (but originating from a better ethernet connection rather than the original router's wifi signal). :thumbs-up-smiley:
One of the things I've been doing is using the "Tether"...
I don't fully understand the concept of an "access point." That means the extender needs to be hard-wired to the router?
But here's my report. :D
I installed my TP-Link RE 600X OneMesh Extender.
I am still ascertaining the effectiveness of the "extender" part of things...but I currently...
TP-Link WiFi 6 Extender(RE600X)
Man: I appreciate your thoroughness on this. I really do.
I DID run tests with that extender removed from the system. It was an easy thing for me to do since I wanted to bring it inside for the winter from where I had been running it (an unheated mudroom)...
Thanks, John. I have turned off the Auto Update feature on your adviuce.
The Tether app says I have an update waiting (1.07 Build 20220120 rel. 74083). But I'll wait to figure out how best to deal with that after I get the new extender up & running.
Took receipt of--and installed--my new TP-Link Wifi 6 AX3000.
I was actually disappointed at first...getting my "usual" 50 or so Mpbs after the installation. After I had added all my devices to the new network, ON IT'S OWN the Netgear dongle I've been using to connect to wifi on my laptop...
The answer to this, Dave, is yes. When I saw the results of that speedtest (which I just did on a lark at my MIL's house), you could have knocked me over with a feather.
Ordered.
With recommendations from four guys whose opinions I completely trust, it was a no brainer. I guess if I don't get the expected upgrade in speed (Spectrum is currently giving me 200mb/s), I can always return it.
I just don't understand why the wifi on this Netgear AC1750 sucks so bad.
Does this make any sense to anyone??
You all have been kind enough to help me figure out the limitations of my laptop in terms of wifi/internet #s.
But this left my head scratching the other day.
Here is a wifi test from today on my laptop (using that Netgear Wifi dongle):
And I've been...
While I wait until the day I get a new laptop, I've got another question if one of you learned gentlemen cares to chime in.
I purchased a couple Cat-6 cables to connect my modem to my router and my laptop to my router (knowing full well it likely would make no difference).
When I connect my...
Thanks, Dave. I realize all that. I guess what I'm wondering if that big a drop in speed from wired to wireless is normal.
My laptop usage is actually about six feet from my modem/router...so I think those speeds are representative. When I get the chance, I will do what you say and turn off...
Additional information:
I just checked Peg's laptop speeds. Her laptop has a much better wireless adapter.
On wifi, she's getting 50/12. I hooked her up direct via CAT5 and she tested at 235/12mbps.
An UPDATE:
Nearly five years later. A lot has changed.
Peg and I have moved. About 20 miles north of our old home near Albany.
But some things have also stayed the same:
I still am using the same laptop. For those who do not remember, this is my biggest problem in terms of getting decent...
David Norman:
Nah. I'm not a gamer and don't use my laptop to stream or anything.
But my webpages (on places like this forum) don't pop up quickly. There's a few second lag. And weirdly, things like calling up the emoji list can take several seconds. Compared to her laptop and my work...
Dave (and everyone else who has contributed here), MANY THANKS for ALL your input and your valuable insight and help.
I guess I am going to stand pat where I am and will eventually be upgrading when the time is right and the laptop starts getting buggy. Other than this, I'm quite happy with...
I continue to be disappointed.
So I went to Staples today and overpaid on the USB Wifi stick. I got a Netgear AC1200. Paid $49. It was the cheapest one they had in stock. The others (all Netgear) looked more complicated and had positionable antennas and looked like overkill for...
Here's the link to my laptop, Dave. I bought it in May 2016.
I have little fear digging inside computers. Most of my experience is with desktops, but I did replace the keyboard in my son's laptop a year or two ago. That was an adventure.
If the dongle works (and I'll be stopping at Staples...
Our laptops are each used almost exclusive less than ten feet from the router. So environment shouldn't really come into play.
Dammit! I just did speed checks on her laptop (which we've only had for a few weeks). Unless I did something wrong, here are the results.
On the 5G network...
I just did an ethernet connection to my router and scored a 54 on the DL speed.
The tech also advised me to connect and ethernet cable from my router to my Apple 4kTV. Now that I'm understanding all this a bit moire, that seemed like it made a lot of sense. It's done.
Very cool, John. Do they make those for USB 3.0? Would there be any advantage to one over a USB 2.0? Only asking cuz my laptop has two 3.0 ports and one 2.0 port.
I think I might just pick one of those up and see if I see any performance difference in my typical usage.
Any other thoughts...
So, the Spectrum tech came today.
It turns out that everything was pretty much as it should have been.
Which leads to both good news and bad news scenarios.
By me going out and getting the new modem and router, it opened me up to a 5G network--something I didn't have with the old gear...
