That's interesting. And seeing as how I'm rather overwhelmed at the moment in trying to take a good portrait, it might make sense to get the E-TTL functionality. But I know that what you're saying is right, Cameron. I'm just not sure I have the ability to figure this all out.

They most certainly are NOT Canon gadgets, John! These are the units I purchased. I tried the camera in both P (Program AE), and Tv (Shutter priority AE) with the units.

I just moved my AF to my AE/Lock button on the back of my Rebel XS. I don't use continuous shooting hardly at all, so I don't think the AE being moved to the Half-shutter function will have any impact on me.
