The MGM shorts that brought the series to an end aren't really very good, at least not to me. There are a handful of them that echo the charm and talent of the Roach shorts, but most of them either try too hard or are very preachy or are simply dull. And the last crop of kid discoveries aren't...
Just hilarious! Amazing how Roach discovered these adorable babies like Wheezer, Stymie, and Spanky, and then we watched them grow up on camera. He was such a canny, resourceful producer!
I don't think as kids we realized when we first saw these how canny Hal Roach was in picking out a fantastic cross section of kid types to be part of his Gang. Just wonderful!
Priceless. Great lines from so many, and to see three generations of Gang members (Mary and Mickey, Joe and Farina, Stymie, Wheezer, and Spanky) just warms my heart.
"Here's some phony notes from the gang."
The Our Gang Follies of 1938 ranks as one of the greatest shorts of all time, IMO. Great original songs performed by a cast of young dynamite performers and a production design that's eye-popping in its luxury and detail. Great filmmaking by any standard!
