Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

If I remember correctly, the Blu-ray of the set also allows for that choice. The DVD (which I reviewed) only offers the color transfers.

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

I reviewed several seasons of The Odd Couple (and bought the ones I didn't review), but it hurts my heart every time I watch them because I know anything dealing with music has been edited out (and Felix did love his standards).

My gosh, looking at that list is like a recap of my viewing habits as a kid! 10 of those 17 listed shows were of the don't-miss variety!

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

If it weren't for those tiny UHF stations back in the 1960s, I never would have seen How to Marry a Millionaire, My Little Margie, Private Secretary, and others. The VHS stations carried the more famous syndicated items like The Adventures of Superman, Boston Blackie, The Lone Ranger, etc.

I also love the show so much. When I got to the last disc in the set, I stopped watching because I didn't want there not to be any more episodes to look forward to! I loved the show as a kid, and I still love it. I'll get around to those last episodes one of these days.

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Well, I remember that the first releases didn't sell at the numbers Disney was expecting, so they reduced the number of copies for these Limited Editions rather drastically (like from 100,000 to 25,000), so that's another reason the later releases like Dr. Syn and Zorro sold out so quickly.

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

That is another one that went out of print VERY quickly. (A dear friend waited until the week after release and had to buy it on Ebay for about double what I paid.) I was so very lucky to get it, and I have enjoyed it and Zorro probably the most of the live action Disney Vault titles.

I'm doing my part to keep B&W TV alive. I pulled season two of Bewitched off the shelf and began watching it the other day. I hadn't watched this series in YEARS, and I'm enjoying revisiting it so much.

I'll add my voice to the others in grateful thanks for years of interesting and fun posts from you, Gary. Hope you'll visit often.

The People's Choice and Hennessey are both grail shows for me.

I wouldn't swear to it since I watched them so long ago, but it seems like one episode did sort of spring from her presence on the show (maybe she talked Paladin into taking a case he wasn't all that keen in accepting). Most of the time, it was just at the beginning of the episode. And I did...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

I reviewed both volumes of season four of Have Gun Will Travel for HTF, but the (admittedly problematic) search engine here only brought up reviews for seasons one and five. At any rate, I checked my own database here, and I did list the titles of the nineteen episodes in each of the volumes...

The early seasons of Perry Mason have been very reasonably priced at Amazon over the past few months. I filled in all the holes in my collection of the early seasons. The later seasons haven't been reduced yet (well, Season 9, Volume 1 was a week or two ago, and I bought it).

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Always a favorite, and I've watched the box sets to death. The black and white episodes were far better mysteries and hid the small production budgets better than the color ones. I don't have a favorite Lois; each brought something special to the series and they're really different people. But...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

The Pirates films are a tentpole franchise known all around the world. The Lone Ranger is neither of those things. But I'm willing to wait and watch and eat my words if I'm proven wrong. And I certainly agree that the original TV series is unbeatable in entertainment value; the heart it...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

I'm not so sure about that. Yes, Johnny Depp is very popular internationally, but in an American western parody? I'm not expecting it to break records overseas either. It'll likely do better there than here, but with a $225 million price tag plus advertising here and over there, we're talking...

Wow! You've listed quite a few of my most wanted series in that long list. But could we also have Hennessey if we aren't going to get The People's Choice? I love both of those series.

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

I remember reading an interview in TV Guide with either Elizabeth Montgomery or Barbara Eden about their shows being in B&W and one of them (I think it was Elizabeth) said that doing the special effects in color added greatly to the cost of the series, but that the show would be going to color...

The crusty.rivalry between Mason and Tragg really makes the early seasons memorable.

"Coast to Coast Big Mouth" won a writing Emmy the year it was eligible and is definitely one of the series' real high spots (though it had MANY high spots). "A Ghost of A. Chantz" ranks among my very favorites of the series, too. Great choices!

I'd love to know which episodes you picked, Gary. The Dick Van Dyke Show is one of the zeniths of sitcom TV and always delighted me even as a preteen. Of course, I was also very familiar with black and white TV, too, so I didn't have that hurdle to face.

December Bride would be my first choice followed by Way Out.

Neil, your research was a little faulty. Perry Mason did indeed score one Emmy nomination for Best Drama Series in 1957 (won by Gunsmoke). But it's a little unfair to compare the two shows since the Emmy categories changed somewhat from the 1950s to the 1960s. (Several of those years, Mason was...

Is the b&w era of TV on DVD slowly coming to an end?

Raging Bull was a 1980 release though it did have color home movie footage. Schindler's List did have a final color sequence but was for all intents and purposes a black and white film. The Elephant Man was also all black and white, and it, too, came after Young Frankenstein.

I truly learn something here almost every day. I had NO idea The Joey Bishop Show was ever shown in color. We didn't have a color set in those days, so I didn't take any notice of whether shows were in color or B&W. It wasn't a favorite show, but I do remember watching a few episodes.

That's a terrific trivia question. I hope you'll tell us the answer if someone doesn't geuss it eventually.
