So I've culled a shortlist of possibilities of Westerns for me to watch in March. These are all titles I haven't seen for at least a decade or more. I won't get them all watched for the challenge, but maybe half of them???
Abilene Town (Panamint BD)
Bad Company (digital HD)
The Big Trail (Fox...
Well, gosh darn, I couldn't get it down to just 10. I got the following. I decided to pass on Mata Hari and Mogambo because I think those 2 are very likely Archive candidates with Mata Hari finally getting its correct aspect ratio of 1.19:1 and Mogambo getting a new digital recombine of the...
Yeah, Station West is one I’ve had my eye on for a long time as a blind buy, so it will definitely be on the shortlist. I’m trying to whittle my selections down to just 10 titles!
Hey Robert, I hope you don't mind me asking you a questing in your "Random Thoughts" thread, but I'm debating with myself about picking up some Warner digitals in the Fanflix "Get Your Boots On" sale. I am of course only looking at titles that aren't on Blu-ray, but I'm sure a lot of them are...
I just had my first time viewing of THE FASTEST GUN ALIVE. It was a blind buy of the Warner Archive Blu-ray. It was fantastic. Glenn Ford is so compelling, with a hidden past with unresolved issues he needs to work out, and Jeanne Crain as the wife who knows his secrets but fears their...
Very much so. I love Jean Arthur. Now my embarrassing story... I knew from the description and opening credits that William Holden was starring in this movie, however around 20 minutes in I was asking, when is he going to make an appearance? Not realizing I had been watching him the whole...
The celebrity identifier app doesn’t work because the picture has never been on the net. I snapped the picture myself while watching the movie. After somebody identifies him, I’ll tell my embarrassing story.
How about another round of “Do you recognize this face”? This guy, at 22 and baby-faced, is about 10 years younger than I think I’ve ever seen him before. I’m sure Robert will know him immediately, but can anyone else guess?
Those are the initial members of First Artists production company. Since Steve McQueen joined the other three in 1971, I would guess that was when the picture was taken.
I just watched Detour for the first time, knowing nothing about it. It was a blind buy from the iTunes Criterion sale. I didn't find it depressing at all. And you know what?, without even knowing about the unreliable narrator theory, I actually came to that conclusion on my own, early on as...
Hey Robert, do you plan to watch anything to honor the passing of L.Q. Jones? He was a legendary character actor who appeared in countless Westerns, from Ride the High Country, Major Dundee, and Nevada Smith, to The Wild Bunch and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. Not to mention the hundreds of...
I just stumbled across The Tin Star on iTunes. Apparently Paramount quietly put it out in a new HD master last September. The preview is in HD with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio and looks darn good. Paramount Presents possibility? I'm going to have to pick it up at some point.
If the iTunes streaming version looks exactly like the beautiful version that was on HBOMax a while back, I need to reconsider buying it on iTunes, which I haven’t done because we were expecting an Archive announcement.
You‘re talking about the 1936 version, Three Godfathers, right? Because the 1948 version, was fully restored last year for HBOMax and looks impeccable.
I’ll be damned. Yeah, I’m confused about Paramount’s 4K upgrade policies. They seem to have made the decision to start holding them back on the “Paramount Presents” releases (perhaps to co-ordinate them with future 4K disc releases?) and then they just randomly put out other deep catalog titles...
I actually liked Quantez a lot better than you did, as I really like psychological, talky Westerns. I have one question related to the production code, and perhaps I missed some exposition that explained why,
The running time on that theatrical cut must be PAL speedup because the original running time is 1 hour 52 mins. I've only seen the Laserdisc (theatrical) and the DVD (expanded). I of course bought the Blu-ray (Definitive) 9 years ago and have yet to watch it! Maybe if I do, it will come out...
And you fail to mention the price tag is only $4.99! That’s probably the quickest impulse buy I’ve ever made. Dracula now replaces It Happened One Night as the oldest movie available in 4K. As well as the oldest with HDR.
Nobody’s “what I’m watching” posts fascinate me more than your’s Robert. :) I just checked my Amazon wishlist and see that I added the Flicker Alley BD to it 9 years ago, and obviously it’s never been at a price point I’m willing to pay. It’s also streaming on HBOMax so I need to carve out...
I just watched "Ride a Crooked Trail" for the first time. I enjoyed the heck out of it! Audie Murphy is just such an appealing character, whether he's a hero, bad guy, or just misguided soul as he is here. Funny thing, at the start of the movie I was just settling in and missed
