Criterion is not a disc company any more, regardless of how their revenue streams break down. They’re a streaming company that happens to also produce beautiful discs. Eventually (though not any time soon) they’ll phase out discs altogether and stream exclusively. But adding another disc format...
Fun slate (except for Me and You and Everyone We Know, which is awful). Nothing I need to grab, but definitely some good titles and glad to see Army of Shadows back in print.
Wow, what an amazing month. The Bette Davis movies feel like must-buys, and Cold War is an incredible film that many thought would never come out on physical media since it's an Amazon release and was only initially released through Prime. Great stuff.
It looks good. Could look better. And no extras. Believe there was a 4K restoration that showed at the TCM Classic Film Fest a couple of years back, so imagine that could be the basis for a Criterion disc if it came to pass.
A great, essential and incredibly important film I nevertheless can't really see myself upgrading from the Warner DVD. Still, great to see it being added to the Collection.
It's also fair to say that their December/January slates were likely decided a very long time ago, and if you're suggesting a title they haven't considered you're likely looking at a year or more until it releases.
Such a hard question as I don’t know your taste in films. That said, their release of A Hard Day’s Night may be my favorite of any of the DVDs or Blus I own. Not just Criterion - any title I own.
As stated elsewhere, I couldn't be more elated about The Tree of Life. Wish we were getting Voyage of Time as well, but maybe it'll come later. Also excited re: Heaven Can Wait.
I pretty much want everything, but think my sleeper pick is Bull Durham. Seems like such an odd choice for Criterion but the more I think on it the more thrilled I am to get a deluxe package of this great great movie.
Here I was thinking that this was a somewhat weak year for Criterion but now I see they were just saving the best stuff for July. What an incredible month.
I'd say the same for Harold Lloyd - three utterly terrific releases and then...nothing. Might be that these just aren't selling or that the remaining films need more restoration work, but it's both odd and disappointing to not have the releases continue.
Indeed - what a strange comment. Guy simply stated the a point about a movie that's impacted him more than any other, and the response is: "No, that can't really be your favorite movie, there are lots of better ones"? He stated a preference. That's the great thing about movies - we can all love...
Definitely Philadelphia Story. Crazy that Warners would license this one and not release through the Archive, but hey, I guess crazier things have happened. Also, I wonder if this means they'll do Bringing Up Baby at some point given that they've put out a lot of Hawks.
Indeed it was. But the Warner Blu was displayed at 1.78:1, causing much controversy (potentially overblown, depending on whom you ask). It'll be interesting to see which one Criterion uses.
Wow, great list of titles! Really excited about Barry Lyndon, though I imagine that unless it's provided in two aspect ratios it's going to open a massive AR can of worms. Also excited to finally see Personal Shopper, as I've heard great things.
Any speculation on June titles (which should ideally go up today)? I see they've pre-emptively posted Ugetsu, so imagine that means the new restoration should be hitting Blu that month. A slam-dunk double-dip for me. Anxious to see what else will be announced.
Indeed, the Good Morning upgrade is most welcome and I'll likely be getting it. And I missed the Silent Ozu Eclipse set, so I've never seen I Was Born But, making this even sweeter.
Pan's Labyrinth is magnificent and I'm grateful to Criterion for releasing it, as it's one of the great theatrical viewing experiences I've had. Also thankful we're getting Boyhood. The rest sound wonderful too. This really has been a banner year for Criterion, who never seem to run out of...
To me Story of the Last Chrysanthemum is the really exciting news here. More Mizoguchi on Blu is always worth celebrating, and the restoration that serves as the source for this drew raves when it played theatrically.
And as much as I love Cat People, I think the decision not to include Curse...
