Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

One thing about that. Since you're upgrading from what sounds like an entry level BenQ 1080p PJ, it probably isn't quite as simple as "plug" and play, heh. How do you currently have the old PJ physically installed/mounted? The Epson is probably quite substantially bigger/heftier than your old...

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

IF you don't mind going refurbed -- and that's probably what I'd do, if I were considering that unit -- then that refurbed Cinema 60 seems like a no-brainer as long as you know you'll likely wanna upgrade to a new AVR (or separates) sooner than later, which of course, still could be several...

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

I also had an entry level BenQ 1080p PJ before upgrading to the 5050 3 years ago (actually for same price you're considering... and no sales tax nor shipping cost in my case :D:cool:). At the time, I actually sorta considered going upto a JVC NX5 IIRC, but decided the $$$ would be better spent...

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

^I also have the 5050 (for ~3 years now... and using very similar screen size and viewing distance) and generally agree w/ Josh. I would add though that the 5050 might be worth getting even (or maybe especially) if you really only plan to use it a couple hours everyday... because the lamp will...

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

That'd work just fine for me since I don't really wanna (and wasn't planning to) upgrade again (from my 1.5-yo 5050) so soon anyway, LOL. _Man_

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

Seems normal that you should want different settings for SDR vs HDR... at least given how these things (still) tend to work. Afterall, HDR content are generally mastered for much higher peak brightness (w/ much greater dynamic range and thus most likely different resultant gamma)... although...

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

So basically, don't count on any of this stuff lasting very long (at least at optimal/like-new performance)? :P Ah well... 'twas always just a pipedream I suppose... On the plus side (sorta), our eyes also won't keep operating at "like new" performance to matter as much... _Man_

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

12 years? Maybe it's time to upgrade anyway perhaps to the 5050 at a good price -- I paid ~$2.4K shipped for mine -- while you still can for a good 4K PJ that still supports 3D... IF the original 5010 bulb is lasting you that long, you certainly don't need laser-over-bulb for that aspect... _Man_

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

Well, that last review you linked makes it sound like there's extremely little performance diff, if it's even meaningful at all. And the rest of the diffs do seem completely identical to the 6050 vs 5050, including the casing color, accessories, warranty, $1K MSRP diff. :D I woulda expected...

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

Sounds like almost the same diff(s) as that between the old 6050 and 5050... maybe ever so slightly more so (for a modestly smaller % diff in cost). IF their findings are accurate and trustworthy, I might just go for the LS11000 and look for a meaningfully better price than the MSRP (much like...

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

My point was 2x contrast (that you mentioned) is probably not quite as much/appreciable as it sounds, if it's really just 2x. But sure, if I'm already shopping for a new PJ to replace a substantially inferior one anyway, I'd probably spend a reasonable amount extra to get the extra...

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

In real, humanly perceivable terms, that might not be all that much though. We simply don't perceive diffs in the extremes of (especially) highlights and (to lesser degree) shadows nearly as well as in the mid-tone region (and they both essentially fall along logarithmic curves). If those...

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

I'd like to upgrade, but I don't see myself doing it this round... unless Epson (or a dealer) offers a good value trade-in for my ~1.5-yo 5050. _Man_

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

Probably similar reason(s) as for 4K flat panels that don't do 3D, ie. for better HDR (and probably black level), especially since PJs are already much more challenged for brightness and DR compared to direct-view displays. _Man_

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

... so if I were shopping for a new 4K PJ now, this new Epson's most likely the one to get based on that Projector Central review... IF I ever finally feel like watching something in 3D (and actually bother getting the glasses, etc), I'd just reinstall my cheap, old BenQ entry level PJ...

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

Well, personally, I find even the older 5050/6050 models work well enough that way via its (software) HDR slider. Generally, I mostly just keep it at 6 on its 16-step slider scale although sometimes I might slide it to 8, if the title plays on the brighter side (and I notice some potential...

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

Hmmm.... So how good is that really though? Close enough to JVC's frame-by-frame, dynamic tonemapping? OR actually just a small incremental improvement over the dynamic picture mode (plus iris) of the 5050/6050? _Man_

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

Yeah, I started digging a little as well and found some of that info, but not to that degree nor in easily digestible form. Believe my 5050 already came w/ v1.03 that should have the enhancements mentioned although it's not the latest (v1.04) that was released a few months after my purchase. I...

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

Did you actually mean DTM (used in playback chain) or the dynamic (metadata) HDR of DV over static HDR of HDR10 (though either might be played back via DTM or not)? HDR10+ is the other enhanced HDR layer format w/ dynamic metadata. It sounds like you're maybe just thinking HDR10 vs DV and/or...

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

Seems a bit odd, but is the reviewer just saying he prefers to be able to manually adjust HDR on-the-fly instead of just have the PJ do it automatically (after setup)? Don't the JVC and Sony PJs also provide some manual on-the-fly adjustment should the need arise? That (reasonably quick...

Don't forget you'll also need that 120" OLED to be able to move down(?) the stairs into your dedicated HT room (given it'll be nearly 9ft wide and probably over 5ft tall unboxed), hehheh... I should be able to do it for my space, but don't think I can pull the trigger on the $15K... :P _Man_

Epson introduces its most advanced Laser Projector to Date: Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000

All consumer level PJs struggle to come remotely close to actually/fully meeting HDR10 spec as is anyway, so lacking DV support really means nothing, especially in something like this. Heck! Even the new JVC NZ9 (that costs 5x as much) doesn't do DV... _Man_

That's probably largely because just about nobody normally sits close enough to their screen to fully resolve native 4K even if the image actually has true 4K resolution (and most content probably doesn't quite have true 4K rez very much of the time either) -- probably need to have 20/20 vision...
