Umpires have too much power to control the outcome of games with only a limited ability of managers to challenge bad calls. Umps should be removed from the equation as much as possible (same in any sport where the technology exists to make it so), their egos be damned.
A similar thing in...
I don't think you can put too much stock in regular season wins. It often just means a team had an easier schedule against lesser opponents. Though the Dodgers had one of the best records against better teams (50-27 vs. opponents over .500), so I can see what makes it seem disappointing. Padres...
I see the Dodgers got goosed last night.
Seems like the goose just wanted a good seat to watch the game, as they had to forcibly remove it.
Today's Yankees-Guardians game is already posponed to a 1:00 start on Friday.
I imagine Thursday's CLE-NYY game will also be postponed, as there's supposed to be a lot of rain in the northeast Thurs/Thurs night. Over an inch around NYC, possibly over 2 inches in parts of New England.
Yep, never been a fan of the "first round bye" in playoffs. Teams always seem to regress and get rusty.
Didn't visiting teams win most of the wild card series, too?
I don't think so. MLB games are still limited to 2 minutes between half innings (I heard this somewhere recently), and other breaks are usually reserved for pitching changes. I don't think there are any "TV timeouts" as they seem to have in the NFL.
I think under the new rules, they're...
There should be a really loud buzzer that goes off when the pitch clock expires (like the NBA's shot clock). Then there wouldn't be any question.
I don't think any team would use replay review on a pitch clock violation, unless it really was obvious and would result in walking in the winning...
And I haven't heard anyone in the minors squawking about it. If anything, most seem to find it refreshing that the game moves along faster. And it must be working pretty well, or they wouldn't be bringing it to the majors. You can also tell with pitchers coming up from the minors, as they...
I don't think pitchers played as many "games" back in the day as they do today, staring down batters, stepping on and off the rubber, throwing repeatedly to base to check the runner. If they'd pick up the pace voluntarily, there'd be no outcry for a pitch clock.
I just hope it's enforced pretty closely, and pitchers aren't allowed several seconds of "grace" on each pitch.
I also wonder if this will cause more check throws to baserunners to reset the clock if the pitcher isn't ready to pitch to the batter. Does the clock get reset after every throw to...
The rules for balk are so many and so variable, almost anything can be called a balk if the umpire has a desire to do so.
You could call constant balks under the "unnecessarily delays the game" criteria, with certain pitchers who just stand there and stand there staring at the batter for an...
This was almost Judge last night  Though at least Judge actually watched to confirm what happened in the outfield (Hernandez caught it for an out about 4 feet short of the wall). But off the bat, most of the crowd thought it was gone...
There's a lot of bad relief pitching this year. Hard to believe so many of these "professionals" are incapable of throwing a damn strike. Red Sox were on the verge of giving up their easy win in Cincinnati, too, with an awful save attempt by Strahm who gave up a hit and walked three batters...
The season is far too long. I've never understood why the "boys of summer" start playing in early spring (still winter in some northern areas) until the middle of fall (winter again in some northern areas).
A season running from mid-May to Labor Day should be sufficient, with playoffs in September.
Many players seem to just watch strikes go by (though maybe not three in a single at-bat), while they swing at pitches that bounce in the dirt or are so far outside they're beyond the length of the bat.
I think the Sox are toast for this season. They were hoping for a second half resurgence with the return of Chris Sale and Nathan Eovaldi, but they lost Sale again after just one game and change, and Eovaldi didn't look right last night. Pivetta has been in a slump, too, so they don't really...
That's Jarren Duran. I think he had another non-catch later in the game that didn't look great, either.
Probably not yet sent down to the minors due to other team injuries, and he's a decent hitter and very fast on the bases.
Sox outfielders had a lot of problems last night given that they're...
Red Sox: 54 runs allowed in the past three games.
That inside-the-park grand slam last night was hilarious. Plus the pop up just off home plate that three guys stood around and watched hit the ground. Some of those plays were below peewee league.
This annoyance in the broadcast booth seems to be spreading. The group on NESN is starting to do this more and more with Red Sox games, too. Inviting a 3rd person into the booth just causes more distractions than anything.
It's almost like they think the game is not the central entertainment...
