The only thing I was trying to see on those caps was framing. Because my Vizio does NOT allow me to zoom in on either blu-rays or streaming. And even if it did, I can't get a 1.66:1 zoom anyway.
Also the image is quite a bit brighter on my Chromecast anyway.
Summertime was largely shot in natural light. The new Criterion more accurately reflects that. The "RAN" (typical Tooze gibberish), which btw is the older transfer still currently on HBO Max, appears to be contrast boosted.
People have been complaining about the previous release of Summertime being MAR here for the better part of 15 years. I don't think they've listened at all.
Ok lets look at this a different way.
This is how Carnival of Souls looks on the Criterion blu-ray.
This is how Carnival of Souls looks if you use the zoom feature if you have it. (EEUGH)
This is how Carnival of Souls is SUPPOSED to look but doesn't because Herk Harvey went to his grave...
I just want to point out that my current main TV (a Vizio MQ55N) doesn't have a zoom in function as far as I know so don't give me that "can't you just use your remote?" crap.
^That's not the same scene mind you. And besides modern technology can give you a far better YCM combine than what they used to produced that IP in the mid 90s.
EDIT: Oh look I found the original restoration blurb from that laserdisc! (same transfer was used the DVD most likely as Criterion...
101 Dalmatians is not a good example since we actually have documentation requesting theaters project it at 1.37:1 in 1961.
BUT HEY! Since you brought it up...
Yeah I can see why Disney prefers 1.33:1. The Xerography is MUCH MUCH worse in 1.75.
Now back to your regularly...
Ok this is every title card since that's been the most problematic. Crop is dead center 1435x775
I don't know if this was originally supposed to be 1.85:1, but I am fairly convinced that the opening titles at the very least are supposed to be 1.66, even though that...
The OCN is either lost or deteriorated past the point of no return if the current master is derived from YCM separations as the previous release suggested (and that transfer was done in the analog realm a quarter century ago mind you). As for what we have, there's plenty of horizontal...
Ok lets assume that the windowboxing is there on the seps.
we'll go with a 1434x775 extraction because it looks good to me.
Now that problematic cap.
As you can see, in regards to the opening that's the only way 1.85 works as far as this telecine goes without cutting off letters. But...
