This is precisely what I was referring to earlier when I referred to a possible "glitch" or "defect" being edited. When I said it wasn't "intentional", I was speaking cinematographically. I imagine this is the same issue with the jump-cut in early in Lawrence of Arabia when Lawrence is leaving...
I can say it because it's the first time I've ever noticed it. As was pointed out to me earlier, it's always been there. I simply never knew. Now I do.
Apparently, it's not due to damage, but an editorial choice.

I doubt it was "intentional" from a cinematographic point of view. More like a glitch, or a defect that was removed through the original editing sessions.
Is there a gap of a few frames in the early rock quarry scene right after the guards stop Spartacus from hamstringing the guard. There seems to be a stutter at one point. It's much like the gap in frames early in Lawrence of Arabia as Lawrence is exiting the map room to go see the general...
