I think what has been different over the past two decades is that DC/Marvel/Star Wars are smothering the industry. Obviously this is where the money is, although none of these have received many awards. So now we have nominations going to the most obscure films which hardly anybody watches...
Obviously 2020 has been a uniquely terrible year for cinema, but i do think that films should have to open theatrically in a minimum number of theatres to be considered for AAs (100, 500 screens etc). Otherwise they are only being watched on televisions and should thus be part of tv awards...

I haven't seen any of best picture, international, documentary or animated features, have i missed anything or is this the worst lineup in the Academy's history. They should have skipped a year.
