The Alaskans, which I've also not seen, reinforces my view that the selection of titles is simply those which are the least expensive to release. We are halfway through the year (in terms of due dates) and there is a dearth of top tier titles. That North by Northwest (not a WA title, I know) was...
My view is that WA are putting out those films which require the least expense, occasionally sprinkling the odd top tier film. This is understandable when disc sales are falling (if not collapsing) and consequently budgets are under (extreme) pressure, plus we know (and are grateful) that the...
I'm sure each of these have their fans, but once again there aren't any top tier films. My perception continues to be that with budgets under pressure, WA are delivering those films which require the least restoration/money. I'll probably buy the George Raft film.
I am puzzled by the Colt.45 blu ray announcement. Although it's not a show I'm familiar with, to produce this set all 67 b & w episodes have been scanned etc, a total of some 33 hours of film. This seems a lot of work for an obscure (don't mean to offend fans) show when the same resources could...
I would think the MGM centenary could be celebrated by both WB and WA, including a tweak to the WA cover art, a repackaging and special offers for existing WA/MGM discs. Obviously the main thrust should be releasing new titles.
It's a lot of titles if you're a 'glass half full' person but if you lean towards 'glass half empty' then it's one package. Nothing wrong with the titles per se, but why not release one per month with other non animated titles. Hopefully, there will be more to come this month.
I've ordered two blu rays with a discount of $18. No sales tax (VAT) was added so it will be interesting to see whether this will be added together with a handling charge at this end!
Let's hope so. Next year I'm expecting:
North by Northwest (4k)
The Adventures of Robin Hood (4k)
High Society (4k and blu ray)
Three Little Words (blu ray)
Nearly another year has passed without The Narrow Margin being upgraded. I would have thought a well regarded, short, b & w title like this would be relatively inexpensive to release.
I haven't bought many WA titles so far this year and am a bit disappointed with the films released. However, I will be satisfied with Three Little Words although it is more likely being an MGM title that it will be released next year.
I'm buying discs but my teenage son isn't, nor are the rest of my family or friends. Bill (and us) may lament the situation but streaming is the game changer. Even when we do buy discs there is more enthusiasm for those on sale. It's nearly over so enjoy it while it lasts.
I really hope Three Little Words is this year although being MGM it might be a hold over. It would be my disc of the year, the only others that would run it close would be 4k releases of North by Northwest or High Society, both also MGM so maybe 2024.
I'm not sensing much enthusiasm for Border Incident or Clash by Night, both worthy but not top tier, although the latter will appeal to Stanwyck or Monroe completists. I'm in no hurry to upgrade these but have been buying other WA titles recently. Interesting that they are MGM and RKO titles though.
Many of us agree with you and we hope they're in the pipeline. My assumption is that the higher profile titles require costly work because their elements are more worn and that the current announcements are cheaper to put out. Also, many of the titles requested by me and others are MGM titles...
