UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ STAR TREK: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

@TravisR given your appreciation for the offbeat and enthusiasm for less than perfect sequels in other genres I think you stand a good chance of enjoying V - I certainly do.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ STAR TREK: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

I feel like I was lucky enough to see those Trek films at a young age where I didn’t think to question anything I saw - I just accepted them as The Way Things Are. I wish I could still watch movies with that kind of innocence and acceptance.

I’ll admit that it’s not the first film I reach for when I go to watch a random Trek movie, but I completely agree with this take on the film. It’s very much a Star Trek story that just so happens to play well to a wider audience - which always seems true when a “genre” show tries its hand at...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ STAR TREK: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

There’s nothing wrong with the new 4K version of The Director’s Edition. The producers of the Director’s Edition made a conscious choice to put it back into post production as if it were a new film, and therefore, are not beholden to remain accurate to the original 1979 release. Given that it’s...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ STAR TREK: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

Ok, I’m quoting myself which really isn’t a great look on anyone (except, perhaps, Ben Franklin in “1776”) but I really just wanted to give my heartfelt thanks for the tremendous amount of positive feedback (both public and private) I’ve received for this post. The writing project that this...

Yup, that’s the one I was talking about. I’d say watch the segments included on the TMP DE and TWOK discs to decide if the rest of it is worth it to you. It’s an expensive and out of print set that didn’t sell well when it first came out because it repackaged a bunch of material people already...

They must have been referring to the multipart documentary from the 2016 set I mentioned above - the parts on TMP and TWOK are on the new discs, but the parts on films 3-6 are not.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ STAR TREK: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

I’m a little confused by the question - there was a set put out of the first four films in September 2021 - all bonus features from that set carried over to the September 2022 set of the first six films - same discs were used for the first four films. There was a documentary unique to the 2016...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ STAR TREK: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

The only issue I can recall with the new line of remasters is the initial 2016 pressing of Khan having a visual error with a shot being accidentally repeated; it was recalled and corrected almost instantly.

Yup - different regime at Paramount at the time, plus Meyer was directly involved. I wish they had all been done that way.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ STAR TREK: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

I find the subtitle issue irksome, especially because it’s entirely possible to make removable subtitles in the exact style of the original so that the studio’s goal of having one disc that can work in multiple territories is still achievable. That’s how they would have handled the digital...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ STAR TREK: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

I’m pretty sure the letterbox laserdisc was the same as the letterbox VHS, and that was 2.35:1. The DVD version of the directors cut is different than the special home video version that was on the LD/VHS so it makes sense it wouldn’t automatically be the same presentation. I wish we could go...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ STAR TREK: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

I can’t really say anything critical about Star Trek VI. That’s a magic movie for me. If you’re all interested, here’s a very rough draft excerpt from a larger nonfiction piece I’m working on; this excerpt touches on why it means so much to me. I’m eight years old and my dad wants to take me to...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ STAR TREK: The Original Motion Picture 6-Movie Collection -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

Absolutely! Filmmakers working on film for theatrical release did that too. In those days, the original negative was never the final product - the idea that we’re seeing scans directly from original negative at perfect quality would have been totally foreign to filmmakers until this new...

I don’t think these films have been over processed to the degree that some other recent Paramount titles have, but if you’re extraordinarily familiar with them, you can see some of the signs of their work there. Star Trek III was the one that really stood out to me - in 35mm projection and on...
