‘Avatar 2’ Renews Push for 3D Format in Movie Theaters

I agree, Ron - if the public keeps spending money on a thing, industry will keep providing it. Look no further than regular, old fashioned DVD. Studios and manufacturers haven’t devoted serious resources to it since the era of Blu-ray/HD-DVD and HD-or-better quality streaming began circa 2005...

‘Avatar 2’ Renews Push for 3D Format in Movie Theaters

The overwhelming majority of showtimes in my area were in 3D - I’m not sure the audience so much “chose” 3D as much as 3D was their only option. Then again, the film is so closely associated with 3D at its finest that I wouldn’t be surprised if more people would have chosen it had both 2D and 3D...

‘Avatar 2’ Renews Push for 3D Format in Movie Theaters

Not at any reasonable price point but if you had unlimited pockets, possibly. For the shots with baked in problems, you’d probably have do a combination of frame by frame painting out dirt/debris on the lens, and possibly convert some of the poorly done shots from 2D to 3D to get a fixed...

‘Avatar 2’ Renews Push for 3D Format in Movie Theaters

I can’t imagine there’s any desire or budget to take a second bite out of that apple. They put out what they put out, it sold what it sold, and that’s that. The current disc for Jaws 3D (Jaws 3) is a pretty accurate portrayal of what that film looked like theatrically.

‘Avatar 2’ Renews Push for 3D Format in Movie Theaters

I wouldn’t have any sort of moral objection to it, I think it’s just a matter of it being an expensive process and those titles not being in any kind of demand that could recoup the expense.

‘Avatar 2’ Renews Push for 3D Format in Movie Theaters

It depends if you differentiate between repackagings and genuinely different releases. There was the VHS release, full screen and widescreen options were available. Laserdisc came out around the same time. On DVD, it got a barebones release first, which was eventually followed by a three...

‘Avatar 2’ Renews Push for 3D Format in Movie Theaters

I don’t think “real” or “fake” matters. Maybe it did for a brief while in 2010 but we’re long past that. The determining factor for whether a film has well implemented 3D isn’t the process used to achieve the 3D effect - it’s whether or not the filmmakers incorporate 3D planning into their...

‘Avatar 2’ Renews Push for 3D Format in Movie Theaters

It’s theoretically possible but I don’t really see it happening. At present time, there is no spec for 4K in 3D. All theatrical 3D presentations come from 2K DCPs, even if the 2D version of the film is mastered in 4K. (There is a minor exception for Ang Lee’s experimental HFR productions, but...

‘Avatar 2’ Renews Push for 3D Format in Movie Theaters

I honestly don’t see this year as being much different than any of the recent previous years. Theatrically, all of the Marvel Studios produced films have continued to receive 3D releases - Doctor Strange 2 wasn’t an anomaly in that regard. Many CGI animated children’s films continue to receive...

‘Avatar 2’ Renews Push for 3D Format in Movie Theaters

That’s ultimately how I feel as well - hopefully price won’t become an insurmountable issue down the road. Overall, I watch more 2D content in total than 3D content, but when I think about the movies that I rewatch most frequently, there’s a disproportionately high number of 3D titles that get...

‘Avatar 2’ Renews Push for 3D Format in Movie Theaters

I adore 3D more than most but it has not ever been nor is it likely ever to be a popular mainstream format for a majority of the public a majority of the time. Convincing people that they should like something they don’t is never a winning argument. There will likely continue to be exceptions...
