For a serious 1950s TV western, Have Gun Will Travel is probably the best of the half hour shows. A good amount of location work, and it’s a different story each episode so if one isn’t to your liking, odds are that the next one will be.
Back to the topic at hand here, one thing I’ve been thinking about the past couple days in the background of this discussion was how the rigid formatting of early television (say, the 50s through the 80s) worked against the premise of some shows, and have made them somewhat disappointing or hard...
I recall reading back at the time that the TNG seasons on BD were selling less than 3000 copies each, with each new volume selling less than the previous one. You can’t recoup a multi-million dollar investment that way. For years, fans said they wanted exactly that release, and then didn’t show...
I’ve never seen Northern Exposure but I’ve had that exact feeling with other shows. There is that old saying about how you can’t go home again and it might be true of some TV shows. I don’t think it’s really about more adult material being more readily available today. I think it might be more...
From our perspective, the issue became that it was always the same conflict and that’s what made the novelty wear off quickly in our viewing of the show. But it’s okay - not everything has to be for me. It was more disappointing just to have had this memory of it being something more to me than...
Lucille Ball as a performer/star had an issue that wasn’t really unique to her: once I Love Lucy hit big, she came to believe that audiences wanted to see her only as “Lucy” and was also most comfortable being “Lucy” onscreen.
That sort of thing does happen. Abbott & Costello were reportedly...
One of the first things my wife and I bonded over when we first started seeing each other was our love for classic TV, and our first routine as a couple was watching an I Love Lucy episode before bedtime most nights. We’ve gone through a few different shows over the years - and revisited a...
I really love this thread. This is one of the best discussions we’ve had round these parts in while. What an inspired idea. Especially love how it’s from our own viewpoints with respect for the fact that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
For me it was Outer Limits. I had heard about it for so many years and was very excited for Kino’s Blu-ray edition (which was very nicely produced) but I couldn’t even finish the first season and sold it off. I think the one hour format was simply too long for many of the stories being told...
