    3D Top 30 Must Own 3D Blu-Ray Releases

I’m probably as big of a 3D guy as they come, and I was just underwhelmed with the 3D presentation on it as well. I reached it a few weeks ago and was surprised at myself for having the thought that that was probably the last time I’ll watch it in that format. There are a lot of scenes in low...

There was a while where Amazon.co.jp was only allowing Americans to preorder those titles and would not allow any sales to the States on and after streetdate. Glad to hear that’s no longer the case.

I’m so behind on 2024 material that I’m not sure but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was true.

There have not, unfortunately. The opposite is actually what’s been happening - 3D capability is being discontinued on many new projector models. The best any of us 3D enthusiasts can do when our 3D TVs go is to either look into one of the remaining projectors that offer that functionality, or...

I use both the rechargeable glasses made by Epson for my projector, as well as Samsung active glasses that take a coin battery (they are a little flimsy but inexpensive and comfortable to wear). I haven’t had issues with the rechargeables losing their ability to be charged. I’m not sure either...

Frame break, not film break. I explained all of this in my earlier post. To get the full effect of a frame break, you will need to have the screen opened to the full 16x9 height. The visual information that the frame break is made from is within the letterbox bars that you are cropping out...

I think I get what you’re saying. You use a pull down/retractable screen, so that if you’re watching a 2.40:1 movie, you only open it that much, rather than opening it to the full 16x9 aspect ratio of the screen itself. The thing is, the Blu-ray spec is for 16x9, so every BD disc is actually a...

I would like to update this statement having just viewed the variable aspect ratio presentation on the 3D disc. I found this to be stronger than what I saw in theaters, in part due to the frame breaks that weren’t possible in the 2.40 regular theater and 1.90 IMAX theater constant ratio...

The Japanese set comes with a 4K disc in addition to 2D and 3D Blu-rays - why not just keep that?

I agree and said as much when I saw the film in theaters. The first two volumes featured a variety of 3D implementations, depth, pop-outs, frame breaks, all used to very immersive effect, and the use of 3D in this one was much less overt.

Once again: the IMAX version of Guardians 3 is a constant 1.90:1. The shifting aspect ratio version was shown in select conventional theaters.

Still too much! Shipping went down from about 4800 yen to 2600 yen, something like that. There’s this weird thing with new releases movies on Amazon Japan. When they initially go up for preorder, shipping is basically double what they usually charge. About a week before the release date, it...

I noticed the shipping costs lowered by like $15 just recently so I cancelled my original preorder and placed a new one, so that wound up being a useful savings. I think it’s gonna ship a day later than originally scheduled as a consequence but I’ll take that and pocket the savings.

Here’s the weird thing this time around - I’ve also heard it includes the shifting ratios but that’s not actually the IMAX version. The IMAX version was a constant 1.90:1 from start to finish. Most conventional theaters played the 2.40:1 version. But there was also a version for conventional...

I’m preparing for a move so at the moment it’s in a box who knows where. If you don’t mind waiting, I can give you a heads up once it turns up on the other side but it’ll probably be a few weeks. It’s a box set that includes all 3 of the movies if memory serves.

It’s not a setting thing - Amityville 3D wasn’t shot well and there are a lot of lens and alignment issues that are just part of how the movie has always looked, and Shout didn’t take any steps to correct them, so it sort of is what it is. It’s not unwatchable but it doesn’t look great either. I...

Me! That film didn’t have any forced subtitles/foreign language translations in it, so there will be no issue with that on the Japanese disc for a change.

For how often I revisit the Guardians films I have no doubt that I’ll get my money’s worth out of this one. I don’t think the 3D was as creative as on the first two but I’d still rather have the option than not.

Unfortunately Disney and Amazon never came to terms on physical media pricing so Amazon is usually the worst retailer for actually providing timely delivery of Disney product. That doesn’t surprise me, but it is a pleasant surprise that B&N had it!

Bryan, you didn’t do anything wrong. Some people are making assumptions that this is a limited edition they only had a day to buy, which simply isn’t true, but that’s not on you. The truth is that movies on disc don’t sell well relative to how they once did, so fewer retailers carry discs now...

friendly reminder about the Japanese MovieNex discs: Of the recent 3D discs only available from Japan, Black Widow, Shang-Chi, Eternals, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania all feature significant bits of non-English dialogue that were subtitled...

Also, those Japanese Movienex discs do not include dedicated subtitles for alien language translations - only English SDH subtitles for the entire film. There’s a significant amount of subtitled dialogue in this film and it wouldn’t be ideal to view the film without it.

Authoring a Blu-ray 3D disc from an existing digital 3D master does not cost $10 million. Converting a 2D film to 3D at the quality level expected for a major studio theatrical release, that’s what can cost about $10 million.

For better or worse, Warner has been moving away from theatrical 3D since the release of Dunkirk in 2017. They announced as much then. They looked at how the 2D-only, shot specifically in the IMAX format film was doing in IMAX venues and concluded that it’s success meant that audiences no longer...
