OK, for anyone interested, here's the final status of my own WiFi upgrade.
I have a TP-Link AX55 in the main part of the house, in the basement on a high shelf near the ceiling and I added an AX10 on the other end (bedroom side) of the house and finally installed it in a storage room with an...
Thanks John. Your post has made it clear the best solution is to use the same SSID everywhere and just let stuff do what it does.
I'm prone to anxiety as well, and the best solution always seems to try to make it go away. Don't feed the monster.
BTW, I realized that the AppleTV Gen 3...
I ended up going with a stronger AP using a TP-Link AX10 and I have a few questions for you guys, especially John D and Dave U, regarding the benefits of different configurations.
My mobile devices are hesitant to switch to the AP, even when I'm in the same room as it. Is there anything to do...
The office I'll install it in is directly below the bedroom, so the AP will be one surface (the floor) and about 6' from the clients. I could run ethernet through into that room, but this should be plenty good. I always have the option of going ahead and doing that in the future.
After experimenting and observing over time, what I've learned is that in the bedroom side of the house, sometimes I get 300Mb and sometimes I get 20Mb. So, I'm going to go ahead and install an AP in the office in the basement of that end of the house.
Here's a general question.
The new router has 5GHz and the old one was so old, I'm not certain it did. The range of 5G is so short though that my iPhone and iPad will connect to it when I'm in that part of the house, but then I'll go to the bedroom and they are very hesitant to switch to...
I'm glad @Dennis Nicholls spurred me to give this unit another chance. It's working fine, and now I know to do firmware updates only from the web browser.
I like to have the same stuff at home and work, so I figured I'd replace the even older AirPort at work, even though our wireless needs...
What I suspect is the best approach for most regular people is to start with a powerful router like this and locate it centrally. Then, if you have spots or outdoor areas you want to add better coverage to, you add an AP (or more than one) where needed. For people with the starter mansions I...
BTW, this gave me the opportunity to watch the actual data needs for streaming. I was watching Carlito's Way in 4K HDR and realized that the stream isn't steady. It's stagnant most of the time, then takes bursts of data at up to 300Mb/s in this case. That might explain why a 100Mb/s (for...
I didn't try the browser access until this afternoon, since that's the only way to update from a downloaded file. It does have a nicer interface and seems to have more features. Those will still vary with the unit being configured.
The easiest way to set it up is with the Tether app, but your mobile device has to have it's own data plan. So, an iPad with only WiFi ain't gonna work. Once I realized that, I used my iPhone. This way is easier because you can use the phone's camera to scan the code that comes with the...
OK, hopefully this is the last time I invade Dave's thread.
Regarding the hardware version, now I see this cryptic explanation of which firmware version to use on the firmware page.
Normally Vx.0=Vx.6/Vx.8 (eg:V1.0=V1.6/V1.8); Vx.x0=Vx.x6/Vx.x8 (eg:V1.20=V1.26/V1.28)
One of those things...
Thanks Dennis. That's useful info. Of course, does that mean this is an old unit? Does the hardware version make a big difference?
Anyway, after I did a factory reset on the damn thing I decided to give it another chance. So, I configured it again. At least now I know what firmware to...
Yeah, I'm simply not going to screw with it. I guess I'll decide between the Netgear AX2400 and AX4200.
@Dennis Nicholls , my suggestion is to just send it back before even messing with it.
I just looked, and mine is v1.6 as well, which is not listed on their site. Also, I tried to register it on their site and it wouldn't let me, saying (I think) something like it wasn't for this market. To add to the confusion, it's called both an AX3000 and an AX55, but neither has a v1.6 on...
Thanks Dave. by manually reflashing, do you mean by downloading the update and installing it using the web browser based method? The router isn't bricked, it just loses the internet connection, while the WiFi network remains functional.
I'm guessing that in the future I should do all firmware...
I ran a firmware update on the new router, and now it constantly loses the internet connection. I reboot it and it will maintain internet for a few hours or as little as a few minutes. The WiFi network still works, it just says it's lost contact with the modem.
I'm hoping I can push the...
Just an FYI for folks. I set up the new TP-Link AX55 router today. One detail that's probably obvious, but wasn't to me and is NOT mentioned in the instructions. You can only use a mobile device to set it up that has cell internet. The web browser method should work on a wired computer, but...
FWIW, I got a TP-Link AX55 and will try it alone toward the center of the house. That will capably serve the main part of the house, but if I just can't live without better coverage in the bedrooms, I'll try adding a wired AP at that end of the house
Sorry if I’ve been a nuisance, but the various discussions have taught me a lot. Now I can make my choice with greater understanding. Ultimately that’s my goal.
Yeah. I certainly understand who that's directed at. I probably deserve it. Then again, why post things publicly if the only goal is to not receive any discussion?
I'm not a member of Costco. Possibly at some time, but I've been without that type of membership (aside from Prime) for over 10...
I have no idea who would ever claim that 5Mb is all anyone needs, but that person would be sorely incorrect.
Considering Josh's feedback, the fact my house is actually functionally served with a single AirPort Extreme and I can actually move a new WiFi router 7-8 feet to a little more central...
Dave, seriously, why would it ever be remotely necessary, or even useful to have 1Gb WiFi?
As I see it, you have at least 200Mb practically everywhere, with just two exceptions. Dropping problems aside, which is something else, what more do you need?
Dave Upton has repeatedly discouraged WiFi...
Thanks Dave.
Wanting a long term (10+ years) is there a benefit for WiFi 6? I know you guys discussed that, but I do want to leave this alone for another 10+ years, like I did last time.
So, for $100 what do I gain with this?
And what is Omada?
So, @John Dirk , if I was to do a completely new setup, I have a new modem that will serve me for a long time, since it's capable of up to 2.5 Gb/s. Then I guess I'd need a router, and two APs should do the trick. Are routers basically plug and play, or do they need to be configured?
