Josh, only want to say that I'm in total agreement with you regarding your well-written recent assessments of Meet Me in St. Louis, Holiday Inn, Christmas in Connecticut and White Christmas. All excellent films with much to recommend! As Felix (S.Z. Sakall) from Christmas in Connecticut would...
Patricia Ward Kelly (Gene's widow) posted a still on Facebook of Gene dancing with Vera-Ellen in the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue ballet in Words and Music recently and stated that he considered Vera-Ellen the best all-around dancer with whom he had worked.
"Soldiers and civilians, people by the millions, want to see the perfect Cover Girl..." or something like that and to me this is a very nearly perfect musical. Josh, that's excellent that you and your wife enjoyed Cover Girl so much. It's been a favorite of mine for years! Wonderful songs...
As always, thanks for your detailed reply and again your insight makes sense. It's an acceptable transfer with no work upgrading it recently. Did you mean "faint vertical lines"? I know it wasn't an issue with the monitor since these were only noticeable on the film itself, not on any of the...
Josh, I have a pq question about The Paradine Case for you. I watched The Kino Blu recently and thought it was grainy with almost faint vertical lines running through most of the film. Did you experience anything like this with your copy? BTW, I found it to be a better film than I had expected...
Hey Josh. I'm still enjoying your reviews and everyone's follow-up comments, but don't have the time to comment often myself, however, a few quick thoughts-
I had purchased the Blu of The Hurricane when Scott from Kino announced that it was being pulled from sale as of 7.31 (Amazon Marketplace...
Totally agree that lesser Hitchcock is better than other director's better works.
BTW, I didn't get the impression that you disliked Foreign Correspondent, but that you were a bit less enthusiastic about it than others of us are.
I've been meaning to reply to a number of your recent reviews and comments.
First off, I'm in agreement with the other posters above regarding Foreign Correspondent. Excellent Hitchcock and easily one of my favorites. Rebecca AND Foreign Correspondent in the same year. Wow! A hell of a...
So pleased to read your positive comments about Those Redheads From Seattle. I received my ship notification yesterday, so now I can't wait to get it.
I think Agnes Moorehead was fabulous in about any role she ever played. Always enjoy watching her and, of course, my first exposure to her was...
Great review of Thank Your Lucky Stars and the Archive's release does look excellent!
I really enjoy this movie seeing Warner's stable of dramatic stars cutting loose in musical numbers and comedy bits. Bogart's cameo with SZ "Cuddles" Sakall is fantastic as well as Bette Davis' They're Either...
I was pretty much on target with the age guesstimate. I'm 21 years older than you are.
I'm in total agreement with you regarding the analogy between sci-fi/space films and westerns. Yes, that description is accurate of westerns. And not only Star Trek, but Star Wars was influenced by westerns...
Mike, thanks for unearthing my post, but there were a couple of revisions as pointed out later-
13 and 14 should be reversed- Rialto at Ten should be track 13 and City of Stars should be track 14.
36 and 37 should be reversed- City of Stars (Humming) should be track 36 and Mia & Sebastian's...
Answering to my portion only, I have to admit this was my first Roy Rogers movie, also. I'm guessing that I'm 20 to 25 years older than you, but Roy Rogers was passe and of no interest to me as a kid growing up in the 60s and 70s. Really enjoyed it. Obviously, my cousins who are 10 to 12 years...
Josh, going back to an earlier post, I bought Sunset in the West based upon your comments. I just finished watching it and what a fun 67 mins. It shows how "sophisticated" Poverty Row studios had gotten by 1950. The Trucolor looks great and what a great mash-up of genres. western, comedy...
Josh, one of the most enjoyable aspects of your thread is reading about your discovery and great enjoyment of films that aren't really on anyone's radar screen as out and out classics such as The Rounders or Sunset in the West, but are solid, entertaining movies. That's one of the most fun...
Glad you enjoyed Libeled Lady Josh. Agreed that it's a classic that deserves a restoration. Even though many don't, I even enjoy the Technicolor remake Easy to Wed with Van Johnson, Esther Williams and Keenan Wynn. Lucille Ball has the Harlow part and it's one of her funniest and best roles on film.
Going back to your earlier reviews, just finished watching The Enemy Below. What a great film! The transfer wasn't the best as others have stated, but such a humanistic WW2 story. Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens were excellent! Let us know what you decide to watch tonight.
Now that's a disparate group of films. Depends on your mood Josh, but you can't go wrong with Libeled Lady. Great cast at their best and funny movie. Classic!
Josh, I’ve been meaning to get back to your review of 1984 in Post 264 and haven’t had the opportunity. You know, life has a tendency to get in the way of things we'd rather do?
I have to admit that I bought TT’s Blu during the recent price reduction for ALL the reasons you said you didn’t...
These sales have been great, but they're killing me. The Criterion flash sale, March Madness from TT/SAE and now one from Kino through Amazon, plus one on Kino's own site during Oscar season. And I still have hopes that Warner Archive will have one soon for their 8th Anniversary. Glutton for...
I'm sure it's no coincidence that Criterion is releasing Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort as standalone titles with all the La La Land comparisons.
I bought the Criterion Demy box set during one of B & N's 50% off sales and enjoyed all the films very much. I got it for a little over...
Josh, been busy and haven't been able to get back here, but it appears other HTFers have answered well on my behalf. Yes, The High and the Mighty is an airplane movie and the Granddaddy of all future air disaster films. Excellent cast and soapy, but fun. Highly recommended. Warner later made a...
Terry, I would not consider myself a big Wayne fan either, however, there are a few more movies in which he starred that I really enjoy. The High and the Mighty comes to mind quickly, The Quiet Man and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, which I purchased based solely on the comments made elsewhere on HTF...
Josh, pleased to see you've started this project. It'll be interesting to read what you discover in your stash of unseen films.
You've started off with two very good titles. I've never seen The Enemy Below, but have heard very positive things about the film itself over the years. Your comments...
