Thank you!
Here it 'tis. Chime in! https://www.hometheaterforum.com/community/threads/2024-film-year-2023-oscar-pre-nominations-discussion-and-predictions.380890/
The Academy has made many mistakes over the years, but one of the biggest is allowing day and date with streaming. Anything they can do to help theatrical is a good thing
That's not true. Best Actress and Best Actor were close to 50/50 propositions going in (Tar/Elvis) and Elvis was considered at least a co-favorite in a couple of the tech categories as well.
Yes, I did get 21/23 last year. Doubt I'll hit that mark this time - and I don't want to! You'll see why as you read on:
2022 OSCAR PREDICTIONS (presented 2023)
Unfortunately, this one seems pre-ordained in several categories. And, for me personally, pre-ordained in most of them with...
What? You think that if Chinatown, Network, Godfather II were being made now AND were big hits, the Academy would still be nominating tiny indies instead?
Uh, huh. Not buyings that "assertion" times Infiinity
But, that's because AUDIENCES stopped seeing just about any movies of relevance. They just want blockbuster pap. Hence, studios basically have abandoned substantive cinema. It's a chicken or the egg scenario - but, it's AUDIENCES who are the drivers here, not the "The Oscars"
Ranking Best Animated Shorts:
1. ICE MERCHANTS (Youtube)- Simple, moving and even a bit profound
2. MY YEAR OF DICKS (Vimeo) Different animation styles doesn't quite live up to title, but effective
3. THE BOY, THE MOLE, THE FOX AND THE HORSE (AppleTV) Sweet Handrawn but gets a little...
Fair enough.
Diligent Oscar followers who try and see every nominee will now be able to watch the Documentary Nominee HOUSE MADE OF SPLINTERS before the ceremony. I've seen the other 4, so look forward to it's release...
Have you seen all 5?
And, yes it will win. NO film ever nominated in both Foreign and Best Picture has ever lost in the International category. But, I really like all 5. So, won't be disappointed whichever wins
Caught all 5 of the Foreign films now. My Rankings of the Best International Picture nominees:
5. CLOSE
4. EO
3. ARGENTINA 1985
2. THE QUIET GIRL
1. ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT.
Very good crop of nominees. Indeed, I prefer All 5 of these to the majority of the actual Best Picture nominees!
And, they gave Ennio Morricone an Honorary Oscar because they didn't want him to die without ever winning one. And, then he won a competive one. He should have given his honorary one back! Jerk!
As I noted earlier in this thread, TO LESLIE absoluted DID get a theatrical release in October. It played the required week at the Laemmle in Santa Monica.
P.S. A critic friend of mine who has a vote in 2 or 3 different Awards groups just messaged me saying that he HAD seen TO LESLIE back in...
I've been fighting this fight for YEARS. Glad to have another warrior in the ring with me!
NOBODY uses the term "snub" like this in their personal lives. If you get snubbed by someone - you know it!
The only real and genuine Awards "snub" in recent memory was Roseanne after she made her racist...
That's looking at the wrong end of the telescope.
The real issue is that the studios who used to make WELL BUDGETED dramatic films stopped making them because audiences prefer sequels and blockbusters. The reason Miramax filled a void with the "modestly" budgeted dramas was that those are as...
And, where did I write that? It was quite clearly me expressing a personal opinion that I felt it worthy. Silly word play on your part.
TO LESLIE got a very limited release. Did the producers self-distribute in October?
A. Wouldn't happen.
B. Why should that reflect on the work by Director Schrader, Mulligan, Kazan, Morton and the rest of the cast & crew that deserved recognition?
Happy to see ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT do so well.
Bravo to Bill Nighy for LIVING.
Too bad MOONAGE DAYDREAM didn't get in for Documentary, but very happy for ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED.
Really? POP GUN 2 for Screenplay? Are these the MTV Awards?
The TRIANGLE OF SADNESS nominations are...
