As time goes on, other notable directors- Tarantino, Fincher, P.T. Anderson and Wes Anderson could be added, sad to say. I think one of the guys I have listed will win one soon- a hunch.
As distasteful and wrong it is to exclude some from the passed away segment, I can sadly understand why they do it. If this segment feels too long, then those in
“short attention span theater” mode will change the channel.

Top Gun: Maverick is an impressive film- much better than the first one. I don’t think it has a shot at best picture, but I think it deserved the nomination.
Hirsch- remember, Beatrice Straight won her Oscar for basically just one scene in Network, and Ned Beatty was nominated for just one scene in the same film. Bizarre, but not unprecedented.
Not a real surprise. I have read comments at another site on Oscar threads in the past that some feel the Academy’s choices aren’t for the everyman. I think the Academy has to try to pull in more casual film fans to try to reverse the downturn in TV ratings.
