Is this your first time viewing the '51 The Thing, Neil? It really is a very re-watchable film, with the rat-a-tat-tat, overlapping dialogue (a Howard Hawks staple) a real treat. It's a very different take than the later Carpenter classic, but both films are terrific in my book.

This is one of my favorite Euro horror flicks...really creepy and imaginative, and it's great to see both Cushing and Lee working together on the side of the good for a change. Will try and get this one viewed before Halloween.

Agree with the recommendation for Brides of Dracula, and would add in a plug for Curse of the Werewolf, with Oliver Reed on good, fierce form. Night Creatures and Paranoiac are also very good, but not horror films (one's a pirate / adventure flick and the other is more Hitchcockian suspense.)

Good review! Been curious about this film, it's got all kinds of elements I love, but the unfocused story you mention seems to be a problem for many viewers, which does give me pause. I still plan to check it out at some point.

The Andromeda Strain is definitely very scary in a realistic, "What if?" scenario way. There's an early scene in a small town that IMO is as eerie as most anything else you could find in an all-out horror film.
