Route 66 – 4.13 “Child of a Night”
A plane crashes on a dark and stormy night as Tod and Linc are driving through rural Georgia. The pair rush to help the mortally-injured survivor (Herschel Bernardi), who begs them with his dying breath to go to Savannah and give a money belt with $38,000 in...
I like this episode, despite it being fairly average by this great series' standards...but damn, is that ending action scene memorable, as Tod and Buz run after troubled Sue Ellis (Zohra Lampert), ducking and weaving as multiple huge explosions blast off all around them... for real! Incredible...
Excellent work, Randall! Sounds like an interesting episode, and an interesting series, with a surprisingly varied range of storylines, judging by the IMDB plot synopses.
Looks like the TMG set is OOP and going for stoopid prices on the 'Net. However, all 39 episodes are available on...
September 6th marks the anniversary of the death of TV legend Martin Milner, rock-solid leading man and character actor who always brought his A-game to the table, no matter the role, be it stalwart hero, cocksure juvenile, or scheming bad guy. Milner racked up an impressive list of film credits...
Happy birthday to George Maharis, who turns 94 years old today. He found the role of his career on the excellent early ‘60s drama Route 66, playing Buz Murdock, the fiery, restless yin to the solid, slightly more staid yang of his pal in the ever-wandering Corvette, Tod Stiles. The intense...
I knew you'd have something to say about this episode, Randall...and once again, you did not disappoint, with lots of salient and interesting background details to flesh out the viewing experience. Thanks for taking the time to add your thoughts!
This seems to be one of those occasional...
Route 66
3.27 “What a Shining Young Man Was Our Gallant Lieutenant”
As depicted in Neal's great photo essay above, this episode is a real humdinger. Vietnam vet Linc Case (Glenn Corbett) is shocked to discover that his wise and beloved former platoon leader, Lieutenant School (Dick York), has...
Here's my contribution in honor of Glenn Corbett's birthday:
Bonanza – 7.7 “Mighty is the Word”
Glenn Corbett’s career profile must have been in decent standing by this stage (Nov. 7, 1965), as he received special guest star billing here, in his first of two Bonanza appearances, playing Paul...
I completely agree. Randall really gets this series and Stirling Silliphant's lushly poetic (and, it must be said, sometimes opaque) writing, and has set me straight on a number of plot points in assorted episodes as well. Best of all, Randall, is your phenomenal knowledge of the historical...
Another terrific photo essay, Neal, with what are many obviously precisely-chosen, evocative screencaps...and now, coupled by Randall's wonderful write-up on this episode. This is another one I've not yet seen, and both of your guys' work is making me consider watching it later tonight.
Yes indeed. Randall's perfectly-chosen screencap from that series is my current PC background. ;)
I'm a Diane Baker fan, too. Just partial to brunettes, I guess.
Great array of screencaps, Neal!
Diane Baker looks like a whole lot of trouble in this episode, kissing Linc, sitting on Tod's lap, flirting with Alex Cord...yet another one of Silliphant's disturbed, deranged and dangerously attractive female characters. Right up your street, eh Neal? :)
That...
Who is this Ken Levine guy? He sounds like a complete dipshit. What a load of crock. I get really tired of modern critics throwing older shows under the bus, with little research, understanding or perspective. Did this dork actually sit down and watch any Route 66 episodes? Does he have any clue...
Yes, thank you, Neal, for those comparison shots. I'm sure it was a highly time-consuming task. It's quite obvious considering those examples that the Roxbury/Infinity sets have better, certainly brighter, picture quality. Guess I'll be hanging on to those sets, then. ;)
Yes, terrific photo essay of this fine Glenn Corbett episode, Neal! And Randall, you don't post often (at least, not nearly enough for my liking! ;) ) - but when you do, boy do you deliver! Thank you for another fascinating and perceptive write-up...you raised several intriguing points about...
I like Glenn Corbett generally, and think he does a solid job as Linc Case in Route 66...but he's not the emotive livewire that George Maharis was. He's too much like a stoic version of Tod Stiles, so that perfectly-balanced ying-yang that Maharis and Milner had is mostly gone by the end of S3...
Watched this excellent episode a couple of years ago. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking Linc is a clueless dork, ignoring the gorgeous Susan Oliver like he does here. Nice work, Neal!
Oh, we have, Neal. I've revewed several episodes in the past in that thread...and I believe Randall has as well. In fact, he might just have some nice screencaps saved up and ready to roll (hint hint, Randall. ;) )
I've been meaning to get back to watching my DVDs of The Lieutenant...Laura Devon is as good a reason as any. Gary Lockwood got to work with - and often mack on - some first-class babes on that show, including Leslie Parrish, Anne Helm, Linda Evans, Ina Balin, Pilar Seurat, Sherry Jackson...
Great post with wonderful screencaps of the gorgeous Laura Devon, Randall! And hey, Neal...did you notice? Ms. Devon's mole/beauty mark is back (last seen in The Fugitive episode "The Chinese Sunset.")
Waiting with baited breath for your dedicated Alfred Hitchcock Hour thread, Randall!
Thanks for finding and posting this interesting father-and-son Route 66 road trip video, Neal! It's well done and full of some cool nostalgic sightseeing spots. Wouldn't mind doing a similar trip one of these days...
I wouldn't be too angry about that, Neal...The Badlanders is a rock solid western with a great cast. Watch and enjoy! :)
Very glad to hear that you're mother is doing much better! And thanks for the photo essay on "Goodnight, Sweet Blues"...looks like quite a good episode.
Isn't Joe Silver the guy who plays Max, the owner of the bar/deli/whatever the place is that Steve Alden works at for a brief time, and then hangs out subsequently nearly every episode? I like that guy, too.
I agree with you completely about the Irwin Allen shows, Neal...just surprised to see you lump the very somber and comparatively grounded The Invaders in there among them.
Ha! Yes, no shortage of kookamunga cuties and batshit crazy broads on Route 66 (and, to a certain extent, The Fugitive)...
