Here we go again.
Apple TV+ will stream Great Pumpkin for free without a subscription during Halloween weekend. But there will be no linear TV airing of the Peanuts specials this year.

I'm good...
Well, it looks like either Apple or the Peanuts licensers heard the complaints about Great Pumpkin. Obviously, this deal is too late for that special this year, but hopefully PBS will carry it next October as well.
It is good to have some small semblance of order restored to 2020.
I'm still...
I agree with Josh's interpretation. Because it's a streaming service and not linear television, there is really no reason for them to disappear. They should remain there for however many years Apple TV+ locked up the rights to them, which is probably a long time.
Well, I just watched the Blu-ray. It is a very pleasing transfer, and seeing it without ads was nice. I still think it's a major loss for network television, but it is nice to have the disc.
I'm so used to ABC airing this with You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown in the second half hour that it...
No. It was poor wording on my part. That's why I said "for lack of a better term" because I couldn't think of a more appropriate one. But it ultimately does make the licensors responsible for deciding where the specials will air. They aren't bad guys, but I think they made a bad call. So if...
Their licensing agreement is for streaming rights. If the owners of Peanuts would allow Apple to dictate what they can sell on physical media, they're crazy, because that cuts off an additional revenue stream for them.
I would be really surprised if the discs don't turn up for sale again in...
I really don't get the hate towards Apple on this one.
All we know is that Apple made a bid for the specials. This is just good business, especially since they already have new original Peanuts content on their service. The company that controls the licenses for Peanuts accepted that bid and...
That's not what this is about. You stream. I stream. Most of us here on this board stream. It's not about us.
As I expressed before, there are a lot of people who do not have access to the technology required to access Apple TV+. Even though Josh is right that a lot of people use DVRs...
Well, the advantage for ABC in this regard is that they didn't always air the specials on the same day/time every year. So it's not like we can look at one slot and say "This is the replacement for Great Pumpkin and it did less." As you noted, they are losing highly-rated programs. But...
This is definitely weird.
On Monday, once I found out the specials were now going to be Apple exclusives, I bought the Blu ray 3-pack of Great Pumpkin, Thanksgiving and Christmas from Amazon, plus the DVD of Be My Valentine. I saw that Easter Beagle was on sale for $10 something and thought...
It's not about those of us here who stream and/or own the discs lacking access. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. But I don't think @Osato's reaction is extreme at all. You just don't seem to understand why the rest of us think this is an issue.
The point, as I tried to explain...
ABC began airing them in 2000. So they had them for 19 years.
Actually, no. ABC always aired Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown in February, too, although now I'm having trouble remembering if it was on this year or not. I always watch it, but one year kind of blurs into the next, especially...
Thanks, but that isn't an issue for me. I'd love it, but my family doesn't have plans to go 4K, so I usually only get those discs if I'm buying an exclusive steelbook or something that also has Blu-ray In it. The Blu-rays will do just fine in this case.
They will get here tomorrow.
Thanks. That being the case, I just went with the cheaper one.
It looks like Valentine and Easer Beagle are DVD only. I went ahead and threw in Valentine because as long as I'm getting the others now, I might as well do that one too, even though it's a while until February. I would certainly...
No. ABC had the rights to all of the seasonal Peanuts specials for the last several years. Now, AppleTV+ does. Apparently all of them will be AppleTV+ exclusives unless you buy the discs.
I don't think @Malcom_R is saying it's gone. But its removal from broadcast TV feels significant. A...
I think it's just a situation where ABC's rights expired and Apple bid the most. I wouldn't be upset with Apple so much as with the Peanuts licensors. I'm surprised thay didn't split the deal, like, give ABC a broadcast window and Apple streaming rights. You'd think they'd get more money that...
Good grief. I have the answer, and people aren't going to like it.
From a press release announcing new Peanuts content being produced for AppleTV+:
So it sounds like AppleTV+ has the exclusive rights to the specials now...
You found my blindspot. I don't pay attention to sports at all because I find them all terribly boring, so I forgot about football Saturdays. But you're right. I said Saturday because I figured they'd just be using it for random reruns, but if there's sports, then no way Peanuts goes there...
I believe ABC has the rights to it. They normally air it on Tuesday or Wednesday in place of one of their sitcoms, but the regular sitcom lineup is returning to Wednesdays this week after being delayed due to the virus. So they probably don't want to preempt a show just as it is returning.
I...
