Since 2020 is (thank goodness) over, does this thread need to stay sticky? I went to post something in the 2021 thread and almost stuck it in here until I noticed.
They told the exhibitors to open up during a worldwide health crisis for their movie because they had a movie that was so big it just had to be seen on the big screen. But they demanded a 66% share of the gross for the entire run of the film, which is ridiculously high. Then that movie lost a...
As I understand it, the film was shot in 2018. If I remember correctly, the original release date was going to be December 2019, but WB moved it to the summer of 2020 to avoid Star Wars. I wonder if the executives at Warner wish they had stuck with last year at this point?
I doubt that very much. People who are comfortable going to the theater right now and people who aren't seem to be mutually exclusive.
I would love to see WW84 in a theater, but there's just no way I'm going to do that during the virus. If WW84 was a theatrical exclusive, I would do the same...
Cinemark has signed a shortened window deal with Universal similar to the one already in place between Universal and AMC.

Interestingly, if the movie opens above $50...
China (which does not have Netflix) and Japan are doing quite well. Multiple countries across Europe are closing theaters again and going back into lockdowns. Maybe they think given the circumstances that theatrical is a moot point in those countries right now. But the domestic box office...
I just saw that Deadline says Universal is making a deal for Netflix to handle distribution of of News of the World outside of the US.
Theater owners around the world aren't going to like that.
Frankly, this seems inane to me. I know it's Universal and they have the 17-day window thing with...
That's easy for Nolan to say because he didn't put up the money to make the film, which as of now is still at a loss for WB. Its receipts have slowed to a crawl, so the chances of it becoming profitable based on its performance right now are slim.
There goes England into another (at least) monthlong lockdown.

Italy is shutting down movie theaters again amidst a coronavirus spike there. Although for now this is only through November 24, there is no guarantee of when they will actually open again.

I am sure WB will...
In other news, I wandered over to Cinemark's web site to do my occasional check on how busy my local theater is. It turns out there are no shows there today at all. They are now operating Friday/Saturday/Sunday only.
That's exactly what I said. This was in spring 2005 or thereabouts, so to be fair Shrek 2 was extremely recent and extremely successful. But that still doesn't explain or justify how I was the only one in the entire class to know her for anything else.
I was not a big fan of that teacher for...
When I was in high school, I took a drama class which was an elective. The textbook mentioned something about Julie Andrews, and another student in the class raised their hand and asked who that was. The teacher tried referencing Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music, but no one else in the...
Sure they do. The younger generation just thinks he's Donkey. Or depending on their age, maybe Mushu.
I am aware of who he is and what his various achievements are, but being a '90s kid, if I ever met him I would ask him to sign Mulan first because that is the most seminal film in his...
Right. So Paramount gets paid the approximate box office gross that it would have been reasonably expected to generate in a normal time period, they don't have to share any of it with theater chains and also don't have to pay for an expensive ad campaign to promote the release. That's a total...
The Coming to America sequel is indeed skipping theaters, but contrary to previous rumors will not go to Netflix.
Instead, it's going to Amazon Prime:

In a normal situation, I get what you're saying and would agree with that.
But now, in this particular circumstances, since my theater is discounting other older titles well below standard new release pricing, O don't think pricing the Fathom ones higher is going to work at the same time as the...
My theater is opening Beetlejuice and Hocus Pocus at $5 each this weekend, which is their regular pricing now for older titles in re-release.
Meanwhile, they are also going to be showing Close Encounters of the Third Kind at the standard TCM/Fathom nationwide price of $12.50.
Of course, I'm...
I have nothing to add right now but wanted to respond because @Adam Lenhardt might as well have taken the words right out of my mouth. 100% agreed with that entire post.
I should clarify. I am high risk and therefore have not been going out much. I support wearing a mask when you need to go out, but I don't need to go out. I have been outside of my house three times since the beginning of the pandemic for a total combined time of around a half an hour or...
Sure. Or they saw those already and don't want to make a return visit. The Empire Strikes Back was at drive-ins earlier this summer for a bit, but it hasn't been in general release on indoor big screens since 1997. So that might make the experience worth it to people in a way that already...
I'd be fine with waiting 17 days. It's a lot better than waiting this indeterminate amount of time for Tenet to come out at home.
And, speaking personally, having access to films at home in a shorter window during the pandemic would not impact my willingness to return to the movie theater...
I think the solution is to get creative.
Theaters are going to hate it. They probably will never go for it. But if they want a big movie like a Black Widow to be released now, the best way to get that to happen is to give the studio multiple ways to make their money back on it. Let Disney...
