I could be totally wrong on this, so don't take my word as gospel. However, I don't think there is anything particularly diving the order, that I know of, other than whatever order the producers think will make the most compelling clip package.

That would be TCM. The 2017 edition had its own thread a while back that was sticky in the movies forum for a while. You can probably find it via the search box.

I think this is due to the fact that voters from the other non-sound branches of the Academy may not fully understand what the difference is between the two. Nominees are determined by the sound branch, but all members are eligible to vote for the final winner if they should so choose.

I loved Lady Bird. It was my second favorite of the Best Picture nominees, personally, behind Phantom Thread. However, I saw this one coming in recent weeks just because the precursors weren't lining up for it. I think it was really great and would have liked to see it win something, but its...

Disney should hopefully note that Fox Searchlight was the big winner tonight with six Oscars for their films, double their closest competitor, Focus Features with 3. The Shape of Water is also the fourth Best Picture win for Fox Searchlight in the past ten years (joining Slumdog Millionaire, 12...

I have seen The Breadwinner and agree that it should have won over Coco, but I wouldn't say it is "just due to the subject matter." It's all down to the execution of the ideas that the filmmakers have, and The Breadwinner was better executed. It would have been possible for The Breadwinner to...

While they don't always match the Oscar, it's worth noting that Get Out won Best Film at the Independent Spirit Awards tonight, and Jordan Peeele also won Best Director. Last year, the Independent Spirit went to Moonlight, so the Academy ended up agreeing with them. Barry Jenkins also won Best...

Somehow or other I got it into my head that you were referring to Get Out, but maybe that happened because I just came back from buying it and have it sitting next to me as I wrote it. My bad. As I said earlier, I think, this year, all three of the leading contenders have reasons why they...

If they don't, that would also knock out Shape of Water (fantasy elements), so what wins in your opinion?

+1. I've now got a cough and maybe the beginnings of a head cold, which is enough to keep me low-energy and annoyed. Not too bad, and I wasn't having a party or anything. I'll continue to watch as planned; it's just annoying to have this around Oscar time regardless. So,we can be sick...

The worth of them in figuring out who is going to win is that they are voters and we're not. The thing is we can't tell whether their sentiments are shared among other members of the Academy or not.

That's why it's called the "brutally honest" ballot, no? I think the anonymous nature of it allows them to bee much more blunt than they would be if their names were attached to it. Sorry to hear you are sick, but hopefully you can still enjoy the ceremony between yourselves, and there's...

Get Out "played the race card?" The movie is ABOUT race. If this voter didn't understand the deeper meaning of it, that's their business, but it is definitely there embedded throughout the movie, and that commentary is what elevates it above the B-movie this voter thinks it is.

I agree. I watched it again the other night and had the same thought that I had in theaters, which was that, while it was brilliant of McDonagh to leave it where he did, I was so absorbed in it that would willingly watch these characters for another two hours if there was more.

Here, we tend only to get things only once they go pretty wide; something has to be around 500 screens, at minimum, but usually more like 600-700, before it shows up here. Here, Call Me By Your Name opened on January 19 and Phantom Thread, which supposedly entered "nationwide release" on the...

What I can't figure out relative to AMC's version is: who wants to go sit through four, five or nine films in a row AND didn't see most of them already? It seems to me that if you're THAT passionate about the Oscars to feel the need to marathon them in one sitting, you've probably already been...

That does sound like a more feasible way of doing things, Josh. We had a Regal in Indiana where I used to live, but AMC was closer to me so I rarely went there. Here, Regal doesn't exist; we have mostly Cinemark, plus one solitary AMC, and our arthouse, which is independent and not affiliated...

Actually, it didn't start with In Bruges. McDonagh is an established playwright and has written many terrific plays both before and after starting to work in film, and they know each other from that side of things. From a Hollywood Reporter interview with producer Graham Graham Broadbent...

You mean apart from Peter Dinklage being a good actor that McDonagh obviously wanted to work with? Obviously, short of maybe motion capture or an animation voiceover, Dinklage can't play a character who is not short, because he is, but he's proven to be an asset wherever he pops up, so writers...

As a chain, AMC has, for the past several years, been doing Best Picture marathons, either one day or two days. I've always wondered who that is supposed to be for. Most movie buffs who care about and follow the Oscars will likely have seen most or all of the contenders individually throughout...

A win for either of these films would give Fox Searchlight its fourth Best Picture win in a decade (alongside Slumdog Millionaire, 12 Years a Slave, and Birdman.) That is remarkable, and I can only hope Disney notices, remembers and continues to enable this success when it becomes part of the...

I would be happy if she won it, but GDT has been dominant this year in that category, and he made a really visionary film. It's easier for me to see them awarding GDT rather than Shape of Water itself with the top prize. Again, we'll see. My favorite film of the year is Phantom Thread, but a...

That's fair, but I don't agree it should be the case every single time. This year I think Blade Runner was the most incredible achievement in that category that I've seen, regardless of the fact that it was not IMAX (although I didn't like Dunkirk, but admit the cinematography was terrific.)

Switching gears here: I mentioned over in the software forum that Amazon is currently showing a March 6 release date for Lady Bird, even though I haven't seen a press release yet. If it holds, it seems like March 6 was chosen in order to street the film immediately after hypothetical Oscar wins...

I agree that Nolan's innovations should be celebrated, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that every single time they use IMAX cameras, it should be automatic. That devalues a lot of other great work being done by others simply because Nolan's tech is different.

Let's hope so. Here's to that. Hoyte van Hoytema dd great work on Dunkirk, but he will be nominated again later, because he will do more great work. Deakins will of course, too, but he has been overlooked long enough and his work on this particular film is one of the highlights of his career...

Full disclosure; I love Lady Bird and would be delighted if it won Best Picture. It is currently my #2 personal choice after Phantom Thread, but it's so different from Phantom Thread that I would be absolutely great with it winning. However, actually it's not the highest-rated thing on Rotten...
