Yeah, IMAX is way too busy with the rotation of new summer blockbusters to bring The Way of Water back now. Most movies for the next month or so are going to end up with one week each on premium screens: Fast X this weekend; Little Mermaid next weekend; Spider-Verse for the first weekend of...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

I went back and forth on it for a while but landed on the fact that I didn't really like the first film and this looks like more of the same. So I doubt I'd like this much either. Plus, the 3D just doesn't work for me and that is what everyone is saying is so amazing about it. Even though...

I don't understand this comment. I decided Avatar is not for me, but I don't wish it ill or anything. I'm glad that its huge success is a boon for movie theaters right now.

I assume you mean Avatar? I can only speak to what I'm seeing happen at the theaters where I look. It is certainly possible/probable that Avatar is keeping some premium screens longer than others. But it is worth checking on how much longer it will be for anybody who still wants to go (or go...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

My local Cinemark has posted showtimes for next weekend which include Knock at the Cabin taking over the premium XD screen. I had expected Avatar would hold onto that until Titanic or Quantumania. So if anyone still wants to see Avatar in premium formats, the next few days might be your last...

Then your local theater must be doing the discounts during the holiday period. Cinemark excludes the holidays from their discount days. I know this because they are what I have around here. I was there on Saturday and saw a sign that discount pricing will not be offered December 20 or 27...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Yes. Discount pricing is typically valid for everything on Tuesday unless Tuesday is the film's opening day. In that case, the film would be eligible for Tuesday discounts the following Tuesday. Upcharges (IMAX, 3D, etc.) still apply on top of the discount, so the only thing being discounted...

Being serious, I've seen Cameron suggest that he has some ideas for a sixth one in interviews recently. But I don't remember where I saw that.

I noticed Cinemark has added a disclaimer on their website next to showtimes for The Way of Water. "This film contains several sequences with flashing lights that may affect those who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy or have other photosensitivity."

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

For me, the issue is that it's not even just the running time of the movie anymore. The big chains add so much garbage in front of the movie that the total amount of seat time will actually be around 3 hours and 40 minutes. This movie is about as long as Titanic, so Cameron knows audiences...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

I saw the first one on its opening weekend and not since. I couldn't tell you very much about it now. I remember thinking it was fine; I don't think I was bored, but I obviously didn't connect to it in a very significant way because I never bought it. I plan to rewatch it on Disney+ to see...

I doubt it. But the audience that liked the first film is obviously large, so it will probably make a lot of money regardless.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

I doubt very much that anyone who went out and paid to see the original in theaters in September will be disinterested in the sequel. It has been 13 years since the original release. The whole reason to reissue it was to remind people of how much the theatrical experience was important to the...

Maybe he hopes to encourage fans to see the film several times so that it can be profitable. He said before that they could stop after #3 if the sequels are not profitable, but we know he wants to make #4 and #5. I have been on record in this thread as saying I wouldn't bet against James...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Did Disney announce the ticket on sale date in advance? I haven't been paying as much attention to Avatar as I do for the MCU films because I don't care about rushing out for this on opening night. But if they didn't, it's worth noting that this is the second blockbuster in a row where they...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

The original Avatar has now returned to Disney+ after its removal during the theatrical re-release. I pressed play and saw the original 20th Century Fox logo, not the newer 20th Century Studios one. So it appears to be unaltered at least in that respect.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

That makes sense. I also don't think this is the first time he has said that. It is the movie business, after all. No studio would guarantee Cameron four sequels if two of them bomb. That being said, I wouldn't bet against James Cameron.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

I wonder what they'll do with The Way of Water, then? My local multiplex theater will automatically letterbox any scope film because they do not want to have to mask the screen properly. If Cameron wants the movie to fill the screen, it would have to be projected at 1.85:1 in any auditorium.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

I get that. Though I certainly respect Cameron's talent and do enjoy films I've seen of his, I have never had a particularly significant relationship with his work. Avatar is the only one I've ever actually seen in a theater. So he is not quite for me what he is for you.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

I didn't know that, but it makes sense. With Halloween Ends and Black Adam over the next couple weeks, new tentpoles are returning. Avatar has done really well for itself during a dry spell at the box office. But the theaters are probably anxious to book those titles now and have less need of...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

All of my local theaters are getting rid of Avatar on Friday. I don't know if this is the case around the country or not, but if it is, the last opportunity to see it would be Thursday. It has added $72.6 million worldwide to date to its gross from the 2022 re-release alone. That's pretty...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Actually, no. You probably think that back when they were their own studio, Fox originally planned to release the sequels every year. You are correct that Way of Water filmed back-to-back with the third. However, Disney changed the release plan to release them every other year, alternating...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

If the movie is good, I usually don't feel like I am. Scorsese designed Hugo for 3D, but it's still my favorite movie he's ever made. The characters and story are strong enough that I was completely captivated by that movie. Everything that I've heard about its 3D from other people suggests...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Yes. Not at all for any film ever again. 3D does not work for me, and I mean that literally. I saw Avatar that way the first time it came out but didn't receive the effect. It just made the movie darker and gave me a headache without any discernible benefit to my experience whatsoever...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

My local theater which had one 2D show of Avatar per day this week is dropping that for the second weekend. The movie continues for a second week, but it will now be in 3D for all showtimes. I assume this means the 2D screening did not really draw very many people last weekend, which would not...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Right. Disney still uses the old 20th Century Fox fanfare but has taken the word Fox out of the logo moving forward. I understand the logic of this from a business perspective because Disney doesn't want to be associated with the Fox assets that they didn't absorb, such as the Fox TV network...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

For anyone who saw it, does the re-release of Avatar still open with the original 20th Century Fox logo from 2009 or did Disney change it to the newer 20th Century Studios branding? Disney has an unfortunate habit of updating logos on their older films to match the modern one, so I'm curious if...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Showtimes at my local theater for the Avatar re-release have it showing in 3D all but once a day. The premium screen is all 3D all the time, and most of the non-premium screenings are also 3D. One single 2D screening per day being thrown as a bone in one of the smaller auditoriums in the...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Disney is probably delighted to inherit this franchise. More than any other original property Fox controlled, it fits easily into their mega-blockbuster strategy. I doubt they're arguing too much with Cameron. Furthermore, the "Titanic paid for that" comment in the tweet Alex posted wouldn't...
