Actually this makes my MTT cycle complete. I have them all. I think it is his best work in the cycle. The others seem too slick and smooth at times although the playing is flawless, and the sound is superb. My other 8s are the Solti/Chicago on LP, Abbado/Berlin on DG CD, and Nagano/German...
Did a lot of looking this AM (serious looking). Appears that Beyond is still only available as a used LP. It also looks like Albany SO has switched back to CD. Their most recent releases of Gould material aren't SACD. Sad. And although I've never heard Mr. Gould's arrangement, if it's this...
Just got Morton Gould's Second and Third Symphonies with Albany Symphony Orchestra on Albany SACDs. Surprised that I couldn't download a link to a picture elsewhere on the web that actually comes up as a picture on this site to show what the covers looked like. Most everybody else does that...
Mahler - Symphony No. 2
Budapest Festival Orchestra
Ivan Fischer, cond.
Channel Classics SACD
This is the eighth interpretation (vinyl, CD, SACD) I've purchased over the last 35 years; and after listening to this one, I see no reason to ever invest in a ninth.
An awe-inspiring performance...
Paul,
There are two. I have the old Robert Shaw/Atlanta CD and find it OK but not as compelling as Munch. But it's just stereo. I haven't heard the Spano/Atlanta at all and read some less than thrilling reviews of it as well. I know that Norrington is a stray bullet at times, but I love his...
Berlioz: Requiem. Roger Norrington and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.
I have a couple other Requiems, notably the Munch/Boston on LP and SACD. It has been my benchmark for 35 years or so. This new recording has some odd tempos but absolutely spectacular sound. Berlioz...
Mahler: Symphony No. 3
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Riccardo Chailly, cond.
Decca SACD. Easily the finest 3rd I've heard to date (got 4 different recordings).

Looks like Warner Brothers 9 47332-9. It's in a DVD-A style case. The cover says DVD Audio - Advanced Resolution at the top and a blurb at the bottom stating that it won't play in CD players. And there is a really tiny DVD Audio logo on the disc. Hope this helps. It's a great album.

Bela Fleck: the BlueGrass Sessions - Tales from the Acoustic Planet, Volume 2. Way too long a title for a superb DVD-A album. My first Fleck. No CD layer. Just beautiful music.

Just got the Bach 4 Tocattas and Fugues by E Power Biggs on SACD. Good reissue of a classic. I have the original Columbia SQ Quad LP, and this SACD brings back memories of listening to the vinyl on my old departed Kenwood quad receiver (that also had QS AND CD-4.

Paul.S,
I can't speak to the Bernstein Mahler 1 to which you refer, even though I have his recordings of 2 through 7 on vinyl. I can however highly recommend this very recent SACD of the same work. It is very, very good and much higher -fi than the the early 60s Bernstein. Bernstein got me...
PaulT,
Don't let Mahler's minor key version of Frere Jacques put you off. What he does with it is astounding. I started with the 2nd over 30 years ago. Still get goose bumps. But be prepared for a big choral finale. Doesn't matter if you don't understand German. All the discs have...
Paul T, I would start with No. 1 and see if you like what you're hearing. The symphonies get progressively more complex and daunting as you work your way through them.
Paul.S, I only have the Zander 5, and I am quite fond of it. Another new series to consider is Chailly/Concertgebouw. Of...
The new Mahler 7 with Michael Tilson-Thomas and the San Franciscans in SACD should arrive in my mailbox tomorrow. If its as good as all their other Mahler releases it will be spectacular.
