Since we're sharing memories, I saw ST:TMP when I was 18... freshman at U of Md. The movie was showing in the College Park Theater there for one dollar. I was a big Star Trek fan then (and now). The thing is, I don't remember my initial reaction to it other than I liked it. Like Nelson, I...
While there have been instances where the Enterprise had to act in a military fashion, their mission was "to seek out new life"... hardly a military mission, unless it is conquest.
Gene Roddenberry disagreed with the script's naval texture and Khan's Captain Ahab undertones, but was mostly...
Unfortunately he really did not. A good director to be sure, unfortunately, he felt compelled to make Starfleet military which was at odds with the stars who knew that it was not.
My understanding is that although Abrams is out, the hack writers involved in the first two will write the third...
Pretty sad really when a movie gets good reviews simply on the basis of "Visually spectacular and suitably action packed" (and it is visually spectacular and action-packed). But the story is stupid and the characters completely different from what made them famous.
Agreed.. brilliant analysis Ted. A technically well produced movie with a script that could not be more moronic.
The irony of all this is that the original Star Trek was successful because of its characters and stories but with the most basic of special effects. The new Star Trek is devoid of...
Which is odd since their mission is explicitly to explore. It even says so at the beginning of each episode. Typically, the military does not explore unless it is to explore for battle advantage. So they wore many hats or there are branches of Starfleet that are indeed military. I guess it's...
Good points. However, it is quite clear that Meyer made Starfleet's primary function as military... as noted by the uniforms and the war games we are greeted with in the opening of TWOK. In the series they are primarily explorers (our 5 year mission, to explore strange new worlds...) who are...
The curse of all the projects being bundled into the first Star Trek movie attributes to its high cost.. the result of much political drama in the studios I understand it. Had the movie been done without all the baggage heaped on, then the budget would have been more reasonable.
While...
To you perhaps, but for me it is the most epic in story and production with good science fiction themes. In my view, Harve "the Powers of Mathew Star" Bennet took the franchise in the wrong direction. And while I like some other work Nick Meyer did, Star Trek is not one of them.
“To put together the complete score the decision was to go back to the original Analogue 16-track 2-inch 30 i.p.s. masters,” Botnick explains. “John Davis at Precision Audiosonics baked each of the 37 rolls in a convection oven at 110º for eight hours so that they were playable, then rolled out...
The thing ST V did best was show the deep friendship that existed between the three, and that what's get's me through watching this movie.
For me, STMP is still the best.
It may be Earth, but it is DEFINITELY not the Earth we know as it has evolved into a form of utopian society, being a couple of hundred years into the future (we should be so lucky). That is what I meant by "not of this world".
I agreee with Norm that the "Meyer" uniforms suck as well as Meyer's general vision of Trek being militaristic. ST6 is a story that could have taken place in any setting and offered little science fiction elements... more of a mediocre political thriller.
I have no problems with the uniforms...
I have that as well... haven't built it yet some 15 - 20 years later. Looking Phil's model though has sparked some interest in working on it.
However to do it right, it seems I will need some kind of filler putty to fill all the seams (and sand it) so that the light only comes through where it...

Agreed. As one who saw this in the theater originally and all the home video versions that came after, I prefer the DC by far.
I've decided to hold off on this purchase for the time being.
I prefer the theatrical cut myself. I do like the fact that the extended cut explains the relationship of Peter to Scotty so we see the relevance of Scotty's loss but it was done so goofy that it makes me cringe at the same time.
I didn't think it dumbed down Sulu's character but rather helped flesh out Illia's character as she was Deltan and supposedly a VERY sexual species giving off powerful pheramones (sp?). That's why she mentions her oath of celibacy. Sulu is just reacting to those pheramones.
I, too, saw the...
Just thought I'd mention, since there is talk of religion here in regards to Trek, that Kirk specifically mentions in "Who Mourns for Adonis" that they have no needs for gods... just the one. That was the only direct reference to practicing reliigion I ever heard, it was otherwise avoided...
