I created a spreadsheet years ago of the tv shows on dvd I own, so I can give a decent estimate. I have 375 series in total and 64% were entirely in black and white or started as b&w. My collection skews to the 50's and 60's.
There's always more 50's/60's stuff I'd love to get, but it looks...
Wow, never heard of 21 Beacon Street before. But b&w 1950s tv, how can I resist? Especially after having just finished volume 3 of O. Henry's Playhouse. Thanks ClassicFlix!
Well, 2020 has been a dud of a year for black and white tv series on dvd. Thanks to a bonus from work, I did finally buy seasons 3-5 of My Three Sons, but those were released in 2019, and the prospects for the future are grim.
I have been feeling nostalgic this weekend so I want to give a...
It has been a slow, agonizing decline. There have been times where the patient seemed to revive, only to slip further back. There have been little periods where hope came back, only to have more nails pounded into the coffin. The mini flurry of activity from CBS Mod was encouraging, and made...
For me, the death knell of the b&w era was the purchase, merger and burial of Timeless. TMG wasn't the only outfit releasing b&w series, but they seemed to be the most committed. I don't actually know anything about Norm Andersen, but I envisioned him as something like the owner of an NFL...
Jeff, I have the two volumes of Wire Service that Alpha released in 2016 and I really enjoy the show. I check their website every once in a while but they haven't put out any more, so I have only the six episodes. It's a very thoughtful show and I would love if someone would give it a full...
Jeff, when you detail it all out like that I can see how 2019 has turned out to be a very cool year. Tops for me is the sudden acceleration and impending completion of Gunsmoke, which I was expecting to sweat out over the next 4-5 years. But all these fun B/W goodies add to the enjoyment.
And...
Film Chest had mentioned this as a possibility after they released Decoy a few years ago. They are a small company in my home state. They do a really nice job for a very reasonable price, and I am so glad they followed through on this. Helps soften the blow from Our Miss Brooks.
Major bummer. Maybe they are just releasing what's already been shown on Me-TV. I will probably still purchase them, unimaginative cover art and all. But still, major bummer, especially after the good news that Ben Casey is unedited.
Looking forward to purchasing Our Miss Brooks, and glad for all you fans of Ben Casey. It's awesome to see two classic shows get released.
Has something changed at CBS recently? There is a noticeable bump in activity for their MOD releases, and a veritable opening of the floodgates for the...
Gary, enjoy! I've been having a lot of fun watching Public Defender. I knew nothing about it, but bought it based on the commendations of posters here on HTF. It has predictable plots in glorious black and white, and Reed Hadley has been a treat as the voice of reason and justice. It's the...
David, thanks for all the feedback, and for the care and commitment to "classic" tv. None of us will get all the 50's and 60's shows that we'd like to see, but I am grateful for ClassicFlix' plan to give us some of them. Public Defender is a very welcome release and I have enjoyed watching it.
I cancelled my Amazon "backorder" and re-ordered from ClasicFlix as a third party seller. It already shipped and will arrive tomorrow. What a country.
Looking forward to sampling the series some time time tomorrow evening.
Has anyone received Public Defender season 1? I had it on pre-order at Amazon. It still shows as being in stock, but the estimated shipping date is now mid to late June.
Thanks Gary, I really appreciate the response.
I now know my mission in life: a “friendly takeover” of ClassicFlix via an infusion of millions of dollars in cash. This will enable them to hire several full-time employees whose purpose will be to obtain rights and music clearances to all our...
Gary, if you know - did Mr. Anderson sell TMG because he was getting older and had no one to pass the business along to?
Did Shout buy TMG as a way to essentially put Timeless out of business? Doesn't seem like they were in direct competition. Timeless seemed to be serving a market that no...
Great news Gary, thanks for sharing it with us. I wasn’t around for the b&w era of tv but I love re-living it though dvd. I own more b&w shows than color, and will be glad to add both seasons of Public Defender to my collection. And will thoroughly enjoy watching them I’m sure.
The b&w era...
A really nice B&W surprise mentioned on TSOD today: the Beverly Garland show "Decoy" is being released late this month. I've seen some of the PD releases and have enjoyed the show, so this will be a fun treat to have the entire series.
The only recent b&w release I've purchased of late is Rifleman season 4, and I don't know of anything upcoming that I'll purchase until Rifleman season 5, although I'll keep my fingers crossed for a surprise or two. Over the last few months I've been "catching up" on a few things I never got...
They even have the same dark brown kind of border as TMG always used to have, so they still look like Timeless. I am still a bit nostalgic because of all the great old shows I've purchased from TMG over the years. But if they keep cranking out things like The Loner and The Westerner I can live...
From what I've been able to see of it, I'd definitely recommend Richard Diamond to a Harry O fan. The first two seasons were set in New York and had much more of a noir feel, a la Peter Gunn. That Richard Diamond, although much younger, has some continuity with the grumpy, indifferent Harry...
I agree with all the sentiments of appreciation for all the old tv shows that are currently available. In most areas of life it is always easier (and more fun?) to complain, but this is definitely an area where taking a step back to be grateful is worth the time. While there are a few all-time...
Gary, have you heard anything about a possible re-release of Tombstone Territory? I missed the complete series release through Wal-Mart, and was hoping that Timeless might eventually have a general release of seasons 2 and 3.
Gary - just out of curiosity, if Shout! is not so interested in having Timeless continue in the direction they had been going, why did they buy them? Was it simply the strength of sales of their current catalog?
