Is the 2003 DVD that was part of the original boxset the first instance where they went in and removed the reflections, changed the cliff background and removed the boulder's support struts or whatever helped guide it??

Been hearing alot of complaints about the packaging; that the discs are housed tightly in cardboard sleeves inside. Is that true? If so, it almost seems highly likely they would be scuffed and scratched the moment you go to pull them out.
