I heard it's bad, but Rock Hudson, Burl Ives and atheism drew me in.
I was surprised at the quality of the DVD with near super-bit bit-rate and rich Eastman color. Also, the AR looked closer to 2:1 than 1.85:1.
Though quite long, it held my interest, and I thought the performances were good.
Dreamscape (1984) A sci-fi thriller masterpiece! :D Not only will I put on my flame suit for that comment, but I'll get out the flame shield as well. I've always liked this movie. The pacing is very good and there are a few well placed story high points. It's a very good, though low budget...
Yeah, they are showing them as a triple feature here in theaters this week. The Cinemark Theaters(big wide screens/JBL sound systems) near me are showing them this weekend.
Dolores Claiborne (1995) - Warner Home Video DVD (2006) Panavision (CinemaScope) Dolby SR-D Stereo (Surround)
Some moire in the video, but the sound is very good. Bates is excellent as usual, along with Judy Parfitt. JJ has her moments.
Yes, a good read, and it's good to see this issue being addressed at all. In reality though, even Criterion is feeling the outrageous costs of things lately, and the packaging is suffering. I've seen some releases now include "pamphlets" instead of the booklets. Even the booklets started to...
It's also good to hang onto some DVDs if you want OAR 1.85:1 movies that make their way to Blu-ray as 1.78:1 (nitpicky. I know). And, if you are a stickler for original Dolby mixes, especially pre-digital, they are disappearing from BDs, while they can be found on some DVDs.
Is there any other Blu-ray packaging out there like the Lawrence of Arabia set? I think that is 12'' square. The next biggest packaging I have is the Planet of the Apes 40 Year Evolution set.
Le Mans (1971)
Good sound mix on the Blu-ray with excellent panning across the screen.
Excellent use of surrounds with driver POV shots; engine is behind them and the sound is mainly in the sides and rears.
The bass is the most noticable flaw in today's multiplexes. They can't hide the fact of a cheap out on the bass, it's underpowered, and way too thin compared to the old THX certified cinemas of yesteryear.
Here is what was on my slate this weekend:
A little subdued for starring two of the biggest action stars of the last 20+ years, Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson, I thought they did a good job of building the tension in a nuclear sub having a bit of a meltdown.
Things really start to rumble as...
I finally got a copy of Shane (Blu-ray) and watched that yesterday. The night scenes are very dark, some of the darkest I've seen on a catalog Blu-ray release. Besides making my way through all 256 episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents/The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, I also have a Netflix Blu-ray of...
