The problem nowadays is social media which has provided a voice and platform for those who seem incapable of appreciating the historical context of what they see and studios which are too ready to acquiesce to their misguided complaints.
From what I understand, George Feltenstein of the Archive has already said that Warner Bros will mark the MGM centenary. The pre 1986 films which WB owns and are proud of, are now nothing to do with a 'rival' studio.
In the U.K. the film was shown on the ABC cinema circuit. I had assumed I saw it in 1959 but I see from Wikipedia that it didn’t open until Christmas 1960 - a full year after its US release. Wikipedia also say Warner Archive have plans to restore the film but there have been delays due to...
What's happened to THE MIRACLE? I saw the film when it was first released in 1959 but apart from a VCR release, which I never had, it seems to have disappeared. As a child I loved the colour, action and epic wide screen spectacle and after so many years would love to see it once again on Blu-ray.
Was DARK VICTORY (1939) made available as a stand-alone release or was it only available as part of the GOLDEN YEAR COLLECTION? I was looking to replace my DVD which I seem to have lost.
With only a few hours to go before knowing the April releases, can’t we all just wait to learn what the titles are, instead of having to wade through yet more lists of what people want? I thought there was a separate thread for that anyway.
I was a bit surprised when George Feltenstein said they had 8,000 feature films. I thought it would be higher when you consider WB, MGM, RKO and other titles they own. In fact, I see that Wikipedia says Warner has12,500 feature films in their collection.
Superb podcast. Really enjoyed listening to it.
Good to note that WB now have an in-house 65mm scanner which gives hope for films like Ryan’s Daughter and Cheyenne Autumn.
I'm not saying all their releases are bootlegs but I would say that their Warner Bros controlled titles look suspicious. They released THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD on Blu-ray and for example FREAKS and LITTLE WOMEN on DVD. None of these has a Warner Bros logo. The credits don't even say MGM...
It's the same in the UK with many titles stated as being out of stock. A year or so ago that never used to happen. Much to my surprise though, I was able to order Warner's Ivanhoe from Amazon.com
Here in the UK, the BBC showed The Nun's Story in HD yesterday on one of their main TV channels. Surely it's high time Warner released this top-grossing film on Blu-ray. The BBC version inserted the much later than 1959, Warner Bros, Time-Warner logo for some reason and from what I recall, I...
It's mainly the 1950s and early 1960s CinemaScope films which I'd like to see on Blu-ray such as:
Knights of the Round Table
The Command
Drum Beat
Green Fire
Diane
Helen of Troy
The King's Thief
Land of the Pharaohs
The Prodigal
Bhowani Junction
Tribute to a bad Man
The Spirit of St Louis
I...
