I decided to watch Madame Bovary from the literary classics set. I first checked the Special Features and found none of them played. The film was fine until about chapter 22 when it started stuttering. I haven't checked the other titles from the set yet but I expect the worst. I hope Warner...
The Garland/Rooney collection has been one of the most problematic disc sets. All of mine failed but I replaced them with the TCM DVD set package which plays fine. None of the films were those which I felt I needed to upgrade to Blu-ray.
I was doing well with Bullets or Ballots, Smart Money, Lady Killer, Mayor of Hell, Picture Snatcher and G Men, all of which played fine but about three quarters into watching David Copperfield (W C Fields etc) the disc refused to play any further.
If it's not already been mentioned I can add The Little Giant with Edward G. Robinson to the list. Decided to watch it after not seeing it for many years and the screen went completely black about half way through at a new chapter point. The disc wouldn't even come out of the player after that...
After reading this I thought I’d better check my Flynn Signature Collection Vol 2 set. They all play except for THE ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN. Extremely annoying to say the least.
I've got my Popeye Vol 1 back as well, having purchased a new one from Amazon.com. Fortunately they are still available at a reasonable price. There's no way Warner Bros are going to send me replacements to the UK and frankly, it's all too much hassle.
My first Errol Flynn set (Captain Blood etc) played fine as did Vol 2 (Adventures of Don Juan etc). Vol 2 is a slim pack set. Is that how all they all appeared for Vol 2 or is it a later pressing?
Only one disc in my Popeye Volume 1 set plays on my DVD player but fortunately they all play in my LG Blu-ray player, although some of them skip the menu at start up. The solution in some cases seems to be to play them in a Blu-ray player, although is that what most are doing anyway?
I checked my Rooney/Garland collection in view of the comments about that set and sure enough none of them played on my Panasonic DVD player. However three of them played on my new LG 4K Blu-ray player. The one that didn't being "Babes in Arms" which kept stuttering at chapter changes. The bonus...
I checked my JULIUS CAESAR. It doesn’t play in my Panasonic DVD recorder but does play in my Sony Blu-ray player.
It’s not looking good. I’ve only checked 10 discs and 2 of them have problems.
That's disappointing. WB certainly sent me, in the UK, a replacement DVD some years ago when there was a problem with the initial pressings - can't remember the title now. Disney did the same once.
I checked LAND OF THE PHAROHS in view of reported problems but it plays fine. There are, however, several curious looking blotches on the disc. That great vintage collection LEGENDS OF HORROR with 6 films on 3 discs plays OK.
Since writing the above about 2 weeks ago, I coincidentally wanted to watch THE BIG STEAL which I hadn't seen for many years and which is part of the WB Film Noir Collection Vol 4. Each of the 5 discs in the collection is a double feature. THE BIG STEAL is paired with ILLEGAL and although that...
I don’t think it’s a good idea for me to check whether my discs still play. For all I know none of them do! I watch them once and put them on the shelf :)
