Because it helps build rapport and is a delaying method to give time to think about the answer. It’s normal behavior in every Q&A situation I’ve been in, including scientific presentations.
Folks feel a need to rant about politics, social mores, religion, etc: Use your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Mastadon, Clubhouse, Discord accounts. Text all your friends and family in Email, Messages, Messenger, WhatsApp, Signal, Slack groups.
Literally a dozen ways to vent your spleen.

Bluntly, there is no reason to bring up hot-topic matters of wage statistics and its implicit political push-buttons on HTF. HTF intentionally does not engage in those topics, knowing that people have many other venues to discuss all those topics: Twitter, Facebook, Newspaper comment sections...
After discussions between owners and moderators there is some desire to nudge HTF closer to its home-theater enthusiast roots, back towards its online presence as an oasis on the web, and away from the politics / religion / world-going-to-hell-in-handbasket posts that push against longtime HTF...
I don't think that police brutality and/or racism and/or rioting and/or violent crime falls under the spirit or intent of an HTF thread on petty, personal annoyances.
