Apple Silicon (ARM based) Macs buyers and owners thread

Nothing I’ve seen. On the bright side, you could sell an 8GB unit for a minimal loss and turn around to buy the better machine

Precisely - if you solder it on, why bother? Apple should "show courage" and do away with 8GB machines

Honestly, this is Apple's fault for even selling an 8GB machine in 2021. There's really no excuse for it. Especially given how memory hungry browser tabs can be these days, it just feels like a really dumb decision to lower their BOM cost a bit. I don't care how efficient the OS is, you don't...

This news started breaking today. Looks like the next Mac Pro will basically be a dual die M1 Max (or double the power of the M1 Max): https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/11/leaked-apple-silicon-roadmap-reveals-plans-for-mac-pro-macbook-air/

It's the same instruction set, so I wouldn't worry too much Ron. I'd expect a release on the new chips within a couple months.

I largely use an external monitor so I don’t think this will bug me too much, but I’m sure for some it will be frustrating

I'm still impressed you sold your old MBP so long ago and lived with an iPad for so long. I know Apple's Marketing claims that it's a true replacement for a computer, but I just couldn't imagine giving up the laptop experience. It will be interesting to hear what it's like for you going back -...

It's expected on Thursday evening, Friday morning at the latest. Since it's mostly a productivity/portability machine the 14" made the most sense to me. Here's what I chose: 14" MacBook Pro w/ M1 Pro 16GB RAM 1TB SSD

I pulled the trigger on a 14" for my work laptop (only used when on the road) - looking forward to giving it a try.

Exactly it. Just imagine how many movie production crews that are shooting on location are going to be thrilled they can do dailies/reel review and cutting on a laptop instead of having to haul around Mac Pros.

I actually love the idea of touch bar - what I hate is how it was implemented. They basically built a small network on the OS to feed touchbar, and it is somewhat bug prone.

I've only owned a few macs - they don't fit my gaming hobby too well, but I remain a fan of them for certain use cases (DAW primarily). The M1X Mac Mini when it comes out may be the ideal machine for me to use as my creative workstation for Audio, film and photo editing. For now, I just put an...

@Sam Posten - some good analysis of M1 performance. Clearly optimization is key here, as Apple software works great, 3rd party formats have some issues. I suspect Apple will have to work on optimization for various raw formats over time - but this makes the forthcoming rumored M1X even more...

@Sam Posten as anticipated the graphics performance isn't even close to discrete GPUs - we'll see what the future holds.

@Ronald Epstein may be able to work around this using a custom resolution: https://www.alphr.com/custom-resolution-mac-osx/

For workstation type users, CAD, 3D modeling and rendering, absolutely. Not for gaming IMO

Absolutely, but it's going to take time to develop the technology to match what Nvidia has, I'd guess in 3 to 5 years they will be maturing.

While I share your hope, I'm not holding my breath when it comes to 3D Gaming acceleration. I think that Apple will absolutely match the best Nvidia has to offer when it comes to video decoding, transcoding and other multimedia use. They might even come very close for content creators, CAD and...
