Cam - I Totally agree... especially when Poh Ser Hsu has taken the time to work with Ed and HTF on continuing the test process.... I love good banter as much as anyone (I know, a shock...;) But... This went over the top...Gents... please, no more smarta** comments, ok?
Curtis, you are right, there are quiet places anywhere. Besides, even 60 dB of background loise is neglible. For example, against a 120 dB peak subwoofer output, the 60 dB background noise we had here would represent 0.1 % THD... neglible in this type of testing. And I am sure Dr. Hsu will...
Ed - Yes, it was tuned at 20 Hz... And it is a scary thing to do with a $2500 passive subwoofer. The K2 is a monster, also... The clip lights did not come back on... OH... and the cement truck is safe... PHEW !
Frank - I just tested my B4+ outside, and there was a concrete truck pouring a foundation for a new house, traffic noise... generally 60 dB of background noise on average. I don't think it hurt the results. By the way, it did hit 118 dB outside at 20 Hz... with below 10 % distortion, at 119...
Ed - The vette is a 2004 convertible, so the subwoofer won't fit in the trunk. However, in the interest of science, I would drive it up in my Aviator. And since Ed is the brains, HE gets to do the work - I will be running the bar. We ARE allowed to have SOME fun... aren't we ? ...:)
Dave - I sent Dr. Hsu an e-mail over the weekend asking permission to test the subwoofer. As long as he is willing to give his OK on having Ed test one of my subwoofers, I will see to it Ed gets one. I will keep you posted.
In the interest of fair play, Ed extended an invitation for me to let him test one of my VTF-3's, and posting the results... Is anyone interested in what the VTF-3 can do when really worked over ?
Sasha - Absolutely I would want to hear (ok...read) your impressions of the entire review... Dr. Hsu, as with Sasha, finding out what you think of everything, including any improvements you deem need improving in a review process would be fascinating and educational.
Sasha - As a Hsu and SVS owner, and a hobbyist, I read Ed's review with interest... and I have to say it was the most thorough test I have ever seen. He used a lot of criteria, the most important being a panel of listeners with great ears.... and not just deep bass, though that IS the job of...
Curtis - The PB1+ does have switchable Eqing/filtering... It is the knob with 25 Hz/20Hz/16Hz and bypass settings... All SVS powered plus subs have that....
Ed - What you found DOES correspond to what I have always read, that in order to get true variable tuning, you need tne VTF-3 ... because it offers two different EQ settings in the amplifier, which is the reason for spending $100 more in the first place... Thanks for the update and clarification.
Sasha - I had no idea it was that simple with the STF-3 (just plugging a port)... good stuff ! The STF-3 will gain in the deepest bass, by about 3 dB based on what I get from a VTF-3 Cam, I am not sure what I did to you, but immediately after I posted the lack of difference between carpet and...
Cam, I was trying to stop the gang bang, explain that what Ed did was as good for the Hsu's performance as what was suggested in the manual, and perhaps give you a better understanding about home theater. If you are not interested in learning, that is cool... :)
Cam - About 49 posts ago you had asked if I was referring to you in regard to Ed's review.... keeping all these posts straight is tough... yes ? ... :) I chimed in hear because I have a lot of experience with Hsu Subs.... and while the manual suggests the carpet, the rubber feet will do just...
See ? ...Told you I have been busy...:) From what I am hearing from the STF-1 amd VTF-3... Cam's subwoofer IS amazing... BUT... If he does not own an STF-3... what is he doing here ?... ( a joke, Cam)
This Thread is better than my golf game...:) Yes... The 4 UFW-10's are here... They were actually ordered and shipped before my little "emergency" with the business, and my bride's corresponding dismay at having $2000 worth of Rocket and $4000 worth of SVS on May's credit card bill... But...
Another thought on this... Without reading the Listening portion of Ed's review in several weeks, I cannot say whether any sonic differences between the two subwoofers CAN be attributed to the lack of a non-resonant surface. I will re-read those tests, and post an opinion based on that...
What the rug will do for the Hsu can also be done with rubber feet... the negative sonic impact of a powerful sub with hard feet on a hard surface is somewhat easy to understand... it will make a buzzing or ringing sound, depending on the material used. In fact, after an e-mail from Dr. Hsu...
Cam - I do have a VTF-3 Mark II (actually two of them) ... A carpet under the unit will help with the sound quality of the subwoofer, on that point you are right. But, in a house like ours, which is all hardwood floors with area rugs, this has caused my wife to do extra shopping to find a small...
Ed - Something like that... Their subwoofers are way too much fun to make me think of Saints making them. And anyone calling them "pure evil" must own Bose...;) Well, My mother-in-law did call the PB2+ evil during Lord of the Rings... :emoji_thumbsup:
Ed - I finally have something where I cannot agree with you... "Saint" and "Vodhanel" in the same title ? That is more than I can accept as reasonable...;)
Guys relax... Do you know what those magazine reviewers make ? Ed could not take the pay cut.... :) Ed - I asked you a question in Terence's "Movies that make" thread... Can we measure WOO HOO ! ...?
Regarding the improvement heard in the SVS and Hsu subs... it is being discussed on the "shootout" thread on HTS ... There is a fixed barometer for this... The Denali has stabilized, while the other two have improved... any and all are welcome to join that discussion... it is personally my...
That is why I stand 25 feet, or 8 meters, away... for protection... the SPL is down 18 DB from there vs, at one meter... For Frequencies... the usual, from 16 Hz, 20, 25... up to 62
Ed... 70 hours ? Sounds about right... On another thread here, a fella wants to see a B4+, a PB2 Ultra, AND twin PB2+ tested... THAT sounds like fun... I am just not sure where I would live... Actually... about the time Ed is ready to publish his Ultra results... I will post what twin...
Ed - No need even for a PM... The results you got are so close to what we saw in the pb2+ vs. VTF-3/2 test, and your results are so well written, what I would do would look like a re-write...find both subs a good home...;) By the way... We have done some re-measuring in a room with a lot...
