So somewhat related to this topic, I have a Time Machine backup that I noticed was no longer mounting. Couldn't mount it through Disk Utility, and neither disk repair nor erase it to start over. I was all set to send it for warranty replacement, but decided to see if Windows OS could at least...
Shucked the drive I mentioned previously. It was fairly simple and took about 15 minutes. My main concern was whether it would have the 3.3V power issue, but I put it into my four bay enclosure and it mounted fine. Now to move some files around and retire my 1.5TB (!) drive.
Yeah, I am planning to shuck one of mine whose warranty ends at the end of the month, and going to put it in a 4 bay enclosure that I'm using for a JBOD. So I'll get my fill of that kind of tinkering soon.
Here's a reddit thread about the Best Buy WD 14TB.
For a backup drive I've been looking at a 16TB Seagate internal drive that has a 5 year warranty. It's about $120 more than the WD on sale, but I feel like that cost savings is not worth the shucking time and effort and potential warranty voiding.
My issue was resolved by using a different app, DVD Audio Extractor, which I can extract to .OGG, among other formats.
I'm going to try it on some of my DVD Audio discs now.
I've run into a problem recently as well, ripping a "D.A.D." DVD. Basically, it's minimal video (static images for each track) but high res (24/96) audio on a single LPCM track. MakeMKV only rips the last song of the disc on both DADs I own. There are no tracks to select though, and somehow it...
I have one PAL disc, and it seemed to rip fine without any of the usual speed up issues. Not sure the reason. I was expecting to have the audio speed up like I was used to when playing on a standalone DVD player.
At the moment I have settled on this particular one:
Some of the complaints about the others were that the disks go to sleep and can't be waked without power cycling the enclosure. The price of the Media Sonic one also is about where I'd like it, but there's a slightly more expensive unit that...
So this is a bit of topic diversion, but as I'm accumulating external drives, it's starting to bother my aesthetic sensibilities to have these non-uniform enclosures lining up side-by-side (one is from OWC, and then two different case designs from WD).
I was thinking of just pulling the hard...
Yeah, shortly after I bought the Eureka, TT announced their release. I had a bit of "D'oh!" moment, but then I wound up buying the TT release anyway as a collector piece.
I've ripped a couple non-Region A / Region 1 titles in my collection, and it has been a nice way to watch them without having to set up my cheapie universal player each time. One was the Eureka Blu-ray of Two for the Road. I also have a standalone DVD of the Buffy musical episode that is...
I went through my CDs and purged about 100 titles. There were some albums I never listened to, or that I looked at and could think of only one song they are known for.
I'm still not sure of what to think of the mid-90s swing music revival.
I did rip my entire CD collection, but honestly I don't listen to most of it. So I'm planning to purge the CDs by donating them to our local radio station, that does an annual fundraiser music sale. I'm thinking I'll just go with the "does it bring you joy" approach, which means that most of the...
I use WD My Book as my primary backup. It suddenly stopped working last year, but it was still under warranty, and the return and replacement was easy to do.
I'm assuming those doing conversions of their Blu-rays don't do an additional backup? Since the conversion would technically be the...
I bought the 10TB drive for $150 a couple weeks ago. The price per TB is negligible to do a return and get the 12TB, but if I hadn't already purchased the 10 I probably would go for the 12.
I have almost the same setup. The only difference is I have 32GB RAM and my BD drive is the Pioneer XD05, bought in 2018. I haven't had things consistently lock up as you've described, even with a no-name eBay-purchased BD drive I was using prior to getting the Pioneer. The problem I had with...
My BD of The Good Place Complete Series arrived yesterday, and I haven't seen the 4th Season yet, so I ripped that to watch at my leisure.
It's interesting how the BD authors decide to do things sometimes.
I wasn't paying attention and just ripped the entire contents of Disc 1, not noticing...
