Wishing your parents (and you) a smooth transition into their new living arrangements.
The model railroad setup reminds me of the museum in San Diego. I was never an enthusiast myself, but seeing others' enthusiasm for something tends to be infectious.
I got to visit a creamery where they had just had a calf born that morning.
I didn't quite get the calf's eye in focus like I wanted because my camera's Eye AF setting was set to prioritize for people, and I didn't think to check that setting in advance or in the moment. So this gave me an...
Do you know what the white balance was set to? That would affect the color more than the shutter speed (which I understand would usually have no effect on the color).
I don't mind the higher angle, but agree that more isolation and separation from the backgrounds would make for stronger images. I also get distracted by subjects' eye lines, so the dog on the left looking off camera moves my eye out of the frame when it should be focused on the image.

We go out there regularly, but the smoldering brush after a controlled burn was pretty unexpected.

Thanks for the reminder about Yongnuo. I was aware of their manual strobes, but didn't know they had ETTL models, which he would definitely want if he also wants to do snapshots.
Yes, at the time TMAX was considered amazing quality for 3200 ISO (can't remember if I pushed it to 6400 or not). I started playing with Lightroom's de-noising, but decided against it, mostly on principle. I didn't see it making that much of a difference and the grain definitely has its charms...
