So this turned out to be not having my laptop jacked in to network but connecting wirelessly. I thought bridging the wireless and wired network adaptors would fix this but it didn't. As soon as I connected my laptop via ethernet all was resolved. Meant to post this quite awhile ago...

I use plex as a media server and have no issues there. What I am trying to do is share drives/folders/files between my desktop and laptop.
