Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

If there's something in there, I missed it. I'm alsmost sure you know about the audio commentary available for download that you have to manually sync to TMP: DE, but mentioning it here in case you missed it. It's a decent read. Alan Dean Foster actually ghost wrote that, if my memory serves.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

I don't mind being corrected if I am wrong. I will never be able to prove Wise wanted the cut shorter, but I know it's true and that's enough for me. As to why it hasn't been released in HD, when I was working on War of the Worlds, at that time, the cost of doing TMP: DE would far outweigh what...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

My understanding is that there are too many elements that must be recreated from scratch to make it a feasible project. The cost analysis makes it a no-go. I'm hoping at some point advances in technology will render those costs negligible. I'm also dreaming beyond logic that they'll cut that...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

I always watch the theatrical Blu-ray. The Director's Edition didn't go far enough for me. I think Wise wanted to make more cuts of the Enterprise floating endlessly inside V'ger, but was pressured by the studio not to, even if he made public statements to the contrary. Plus, the theatrical...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

Thanks. So that wasn't the source of what I originally read. Good to know. That gives me more confidence in the veracity of the source. Unless something materializes to make me believe otherwise, I will always believe Wise wanted those minutes cut.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

I have been unable to find the Wise quote I read back around the year 2001. It wasn't in Starlog. I'm pretty sure I read it on StarTrek.com but I can't find it there, either. I'm curious to know how old Vidiot's comment is, because though unlikely, it's possible his is the comment I originally...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

I agree there is no need for personal attacks. She could have simply said, "The man wasn't qualified to direct a Star Trek movie." That's a true statement as far as I am concerned, and doesn't sink to personal attack.

I remember when I first saw TMP I thought, "They look so old!" Now I see it and I think, "They look so young." Great score and nice performance by De Kelley.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

Boy you are sure right about the soundtrack. I got the two-disc complete score and it's one of Goldsmith's best, right up there with TMP and FIRST CONTACT. I also agree with the rest of your list, especially the "I need my pain," scenes.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

I guess if we wanted to, we could dump on any movie, even THE WRATH OF KHAN. I mean really, Starfleet wouldn't use pyrotechnics and explosions near valuable bridge officers during a training mission. And why does Scotty bring his dead or dying nephew to the bridge instead of straight to sickbay...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

Somewhere Shatner admitted, "I didn't use my resources well." That's pretty much an exact quote.

I hated the camping scene when I saw the movie back in the day. Now I rather fancy the scene, the Goldsmith score, but not the movie. :)

Here are my rankings for the first ten ST movies. Wrath of Khan Search for Spock Voyage Home First Contact TMP Generations Insurrection Undiscovered Continent Nemesis Final Frontier I realize most fans place ST VI higher, but there are some jaw dropping problems with it, as far as I am...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

As a former copy editor and proofreader, I can vouch that you can never get them all. :) On the upside, if I were to list the best nonfiction Star Trek books ever published, IMHO, RETURN TO TOMORROW is up there with THE DEEP SPACE NINE COMPANION and the updated STAR TREK ENCYCLOPEDIA as the...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

Good thought, but the book wasn't out when I read the quote from Wise, which had to be more than 15 years ago. The way I see it, Mr. Fein's statement suggests Mr. Wise never told him about any studio-imposed cuts. That doesn't mean they didn't happen. More than once I have held my tongue to a...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

It's possible my memory of where I read the quote is inaccurate. I am checking my Starlog back issues. If I find anything in support either way, I'll post.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

Goldsmith's score went a long way, too. At the time I read the quote from Wise, it crushed me. That's why I remember it: because what I thought was the cut the director wanted suddenly wasn't. Another reason I stand by believing my memory is accurate is the criterion of dissimilarity, which...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

It's been many years but I think my source was StarTrek.com. If I remember correctly, Wise wanted more Vger stuff cut to speed the pace, the studio didn't, and they compromised by giving Wise more $$ for other things he wanted to change in return for not making the Vger cuts. Years and years...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

Good point. No, I am not confusing it with that. My source is Wise himself. I will try to find the quote.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

Whatever the particulars are, I know Wise wanted Vger trimmed down more than it was, so in that sense, I don't see it as a true director's cut. That's the point of a director's cut: So the director gets final cut. I always thought they should have called it something else, because Wise said at...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

Yes, I am saying Wise wanted Vger cut way down for the DC, and the studio said no, that a certain amount had to stay. And that is why I have never really respected the ST:TMP: DC as a true DC. No fault to Wise.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

My understanding is that the studio wouldn't let Wise actually have a director's cut: Wise wanted more of the Vger effects removed and the studio said no. If they had been removed in the DC, I probably would appreciate it more as a true director's cut . As it is, the theatrical version is the...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

I have no reason to believe the person who sent me the email from which I quoted would be misleading me. And that person is in a position to know: they simply don't have all the elements they need at the resolution they need them.
  25. Carabimero

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

My understanding is that they looked into remastering TMP's Director's Cut and, forgetting the enormous cost, all the elements needed were no longer "readily available" or didn't " lend themselves to HD restoration." The project has multiple strikes against it, and I'm not sure any of them are...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

At 15, I didn't care for TMP when it came out (although I loved the score). But as I get older, and develop more patience, there are treasures in that movie to be unlocked. TMP has the ability to speak to me with messages that change as I age. There's a lot of subtext in that first movie. As...
