It's more than likely a separate "Narrative Only" sub stream that is not available in the menu selection but can be "toggled" to via the SUBTITLE remote button. If that's the case, it defaults on when you select the English audio, and selecting "None" will indeed turn them off.
This is standard...
NO! Hyperbole MUST prevail!
All humor aside, I assume the transfers for some of the films were prepped when HD-DVD was a possible release venue. In any case, I can handle something that is "very watchable" way more than most, it seems. I greatly enjoyed ST4 on Pan & Scan VHS back in 1987 and...
Yes. While there are exceptions as noted above, 99.99999% of anything released from a major US studio is gonna be HD at 24 frames/second with NTSC extras.
I'm gonna wait until the Fall when the 4 TNG films and the new film make it out on BD. I was planning on waiting until then to purchase even before the concerns over picture quality started to be reported.
By my reading, I think the review indicated that even on larger than 50" screens the BDs are better than DVDs. The difference is that they could have been better, and those that are quick to notice heavier DNR may be dissuaded from upgrading.
Personally speaking, I noticed, but wasn't...
The real world situation is that there are budgets, deadlines, and other restrictions that must be balanced. Almost everything can be improved upon if given more money and time. The question is to what degree can these things be scaled back on and still be considered acceptable, and the opinions...
Paul H., you neglected to post this part of Penton's comment, which is something I think is just as relevant to this (and other similar) conversation (emphasis his):
With all the conflicting information going on I don't know what to think. As is probably the case 99% of the time I probably won't get hung up on these DNR issues (if true), and by the time I plan to purchase the films (in the Fall when the TNG and ST '09 are released) all the answers should be...
I wonder if being shot on Super 35 has something to do with ST6 having a "cleaner" look. Super 35, IIRC, has a much finer grain structure.
Regardless, these are no where near the nightmare DNR scenarios you'd expect when reading all the forum hubbub. I'm waiting to buy all 11 films this Fall...
When it comes to the films I'll be waiting to see what kind of options are available for all 11 at the end of the year.
In any case, great news all around! :emoji_thumbsup:
