I’m gonna predict:
Until the end of the world #999
Roma and the Cameraman (998 & 1000, either could be 1000),
& the Godzilla Showa set which could be no spine number like the Bergman set, or could be another good candidate for spine 1000
And haxan upgraded to blu ray.
Disagree, this is the first month of 2017 to have any "must buys" for me, other than dheepan and ghost world, I'll probably get all of the months releases.
Well, black girl was a must buy, but I watched it on FilmStruck, I might buy it for the features because the film was so freaking great and...
I was looking at Wikipedia and criterion released swing time and a night at the opera on laser disc, I wonder if those two are also on the docket for criterion blurays now? Or perhaps big Marx and Astaire Rogers sets?
Just so long as it's not the film, "goodbye dragon inn" which is easily the worst film I've ever seen in a theatre (it's an extremely long film primarily watching the people in a theatre watching "dragon inn", the guy watching everyone watch the movie is looking for another guy to have sex with...
Hamlet and Henry v have been released in the uk. Criterion has limited disc producer labor resources to allocate, so a producer who has an available slot in their schedule has to advocate on behalf of an upgrade and the materials usually have to be ready to go, such as hamlet or Henry v...
They've got all the bulldog drummond films from one of the portrayers up on hulu, so it seems like a natural "starring _______ as bulldog drummond" eclipse release.
I wouldn't get too excited, criterion is likely to release it in a wrong open matte 4x3 presentation because Kubrick once approved an open matte presentation for criterion for laserdisc (despite much of the film being hard matted for widescreen in camera or on prints, thus giving the film a...
They also posted a color grading demonstration of Terrence Malick's the new world on their website and state it is coming in Malick's preferred 172 minute cut.
They've only upgraded 150 ish titles in six or seven years, so they are never getting through all of them. they've got like another 350ish not upgraded, though there's probably 100 or more out of print titles in that 350 that can never be upgraded even if they wanted to.
I'm going to guess, boyhood, tampopo, a brighter summer day, the manchurian candidate, paris belongs to us, a poem is a naked person, burden of dreams, the lady eve and a Sweden in the thirties eclipse set
I wonder if the lack of upgrades is because they got most of the studio canal rights back and are preparing a big batch of releases of formerly out of print titles? Maybe we'll find out next week. That'd be a merry Christmas!
Alternatively, it could mean catalog upgrade titles sales stink for criterion lately, versus new spine numbers, given the massive proliferation of boutique labels releasing catalog blurays in the last 24 months I would expect criterion sales of upgraded spines has plummeted in the same time frame
I'm amazed they've put out twelve new releases in 2016, even though it stinks that there are no catalog upgrades I imagine this means the low hanging fruit like downhill racer have been harvested and mostly big projects like kwaidan are the primary upgrades we'll get in 16.
I imagine it will be a pair of two disc releases, possibly boxed, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were a yojimbo sanjuro situation. Each film will probably have the original length original language version on one disc and the shorter dubbed american version on a second disc. The dubs are...
I was looking and criterion have upgraded from dvd to bluray all of their second edition spine numbers except vagabond and cleo from 5 to 7, I bet we get those two soon.
My wishlist of upgrades is long
Vampyr
Pandoras box
Bicycle thieves

Passion of Joan or arc
Testament of Dr mabuse
Ugetsu
La strada
Great expectations
Oliver twist
Red beard
I know where I'm going
Dreyer trilogy

Devil and Daniel Webster
Early summer
Le samourai
