Movies & Cinema during the Pandemic? Catch-all Discussion

Hell to the no. The worst bit was at the end after the mid-credits scene, when the lights had come up and everybody was waiting for the post-credits scene. Most people had their masks off, and were talking and laughing and coughing and so on. The cases in Albany county are skyrocketing right...

Movies & Cinema during the Pandemic? Catch-all Discussion

I had a blast seeing Spider-Man: No Way Home tonight in a packed theater, but I did not feel at all safe. The studios had better offer much more favorable profit sharing if they want theaters in Ontario to stay open, given that the concessions are where the theaters usually make their money. I...

Movies & Cinema during the Pandemic? Catch-all Discussion

Just got back from seeing A Quiet Place Part II, my first movie at the cinema in over a year. The Regal was running a skeleton crew; looked like a manager and two employees were it. So we had to buy our tickets at the concession stand rather than at the box office. The computer automatically...

Pacific Theatres not reopening, all of its locations closing permanently Among the holdings: the iconic Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. The theatre also owns the Vineland Drive-In, the last remaining drive-in in Los Angeles county, which has been operating during the pandemic. No word if that is...

Movies & Cinema during the Pandemic? Catch-all Discussion

Except for the small percentage of people with medically valid reasons why they can't get vaccinated, I'm not too worried about people who won't be vaccinated by that point. All indications are that by mid-June anybody in the United States who wants to get the vaccine will have the opportunity...

Movies & Cinema during the Pandemic? Catch-all Discussion

California plans to allow movie theaters to operate at 100% capacity, with no social distancing requirements, by mid-June That could be a major boon to the box office for Black Widow, especially if New York State follows suit.

It'll be interesting to see if tonight's vaccine announcement, that all adults will be able to register for an appointment starting May 1 and get their first shot before June 1, affects the rollout of this one in the United States. Functional immunity comes seven days after the second Pfizer...

Movies & Cinema during the Pandemic? Catch-all Discussion

There isn't a lot of evidence of person-to-surface-to-person transmission when it comes to COVID-19. My concern is being in an enclosed space with strangers and recirculated air. It's the reason that restaurants with indoor dining have been such well-documented superspreaders.

Depends how stupid and reckless I'm feeling on that particular day! (Assuming it doesn't get bumped again.)

It looks like all of the really vulnerable people in my life will be fully inoculated by the time this comes out. So while I probably won't be by then, I might just risk it.

That solves a little mystery for me; I'd been planning to see The King of Staten Island at the drive-in, but they pulled it from the schedule the day before it was supposed to debut. Now I know why.

It's going to backfire, too. By pandering to the willfully ignorant, they're going to drive away everybody else. I would consider going to the cinema with greatly reduced seating capacity and masks. There's no way I'd even think about going to the cinema if masks aren't mandatory. That pushes...

As existing new inventory is becoming played out, Universal is offering drive-ins two Amblin double feature options: either Jaws and Jurassic Park or E.T. and Jurassic Park -- the closest drive-in to me is going with the latter this weekend. Universal's "new" release option for drive-ins this...

Movies & Cinema during the Pandemic? Catch-all Discussion

If AMC does liquidate, it doesn't necessarily mean all of its theaters go away. One policy is that AMC's competitors might buy large swathes of them up during bankruptcy proceedings. Another possibility, now that the Department of Justice is actively working to dismantle the Paramount decrees...

Double feature of Onward and The Call of the Wild. Enjoyed both. Right now all of the local drive-ins are playing the movies that were in theaters when everything shut down. It'll be interesting to see what happens once they've exhausted those. If the studios are smart, they'll make DCPs of...

Movies & Cinema during the Pandemic? Catch-all Discussion

Just to be clear, @Jake Lipson: The masks aren't required at the drive-in when you're inside your vehicle. My friend and I opted to wear masks because we haven't been in close contact with one another since the outbreak started, and he works as a bank teller interacting with the public. If I had...

Out to the movies for the first time since the pandemic really took off! It's a sold out house. Strange to be around hundreds of people after so long in isolation. About an hour before the first movie: About 15 minutes before the first movie: Safety first: The pre-movie cartoon:

The complicating factor for me is that my mother is a lung cancer survivor with severely compromised breathing. If it were just myself I were risking, I'd probably go for it; what's the point of living if you're afraid to do anything? But I'd never forgive myself if I infected her and she died...

The one advantage we have the next time around is that testing and contact tracing is up to scale now. So it should be easier to clamp down on new outbreaks than it was in the initial outbreak.

New York might make July. Five of the state's ten regions have met the criteria to reopen tomorrow. The other five regions have met at least four of the seven criteria to reopen. All of the regions except Western New York are currently improving on the outstanding metrics. The wild card is that...

Disney has announced that The New Mutants will be one of the first movies out of the gate as theaters begin to reopen, with an August 28th release date. I think it's a really smart choice to test the waters: If people are willing to come back to the movie theaters, it will do much better...

Movies & Cinema during the Pandemic? Catch-all Discussion

Going to the drive-in is as much about the experience as it is about the actual movies, so I think they'll be less affected by the lack of new product than the multiplexes would be. As I posted in the Coronavirus thread, my local drive-in (same one as Wayne's) has put the following policies...
