A new cut can’t happen unless someone starts deleting scenes . From all indications there is nothing available to add to the film. Everything was trashed many years ago.
Also… Oh, What a Lovely War. Saw Roadshow in London. Richard Attenborough’s film has to the best of my knowledge disappeared.
The Victors was on Cable many year ago in a truncated version. That version I believe was on the DVD. Hasn’t been seen since and certainly hasn’t been restored . Was...
Yes, The Music Lovers was indeed Roadshow in London. Where I saw it . Don’t remember the theater but it was given the full treatment. In blow up 70mm with 6 track stereo, the overture was part of the 3rd movement of Tchaikovsky’s 6th symphony. Don’t recall the music of the intermission but...
I have no knowledge one way or another but the original mono soundtrack LP album certainly sounds like the original tracks. The reprocessed stereo versions on LP and cd sound atrocious. The Screen Archives as well as the Quartet releases are quite good.
It’s amazing that ‘we’ are all reading the same thread and come away with different opinions. I firmly believe that the score for TBC was indeed recorded in stereo…if I am reading Stephen Pi’s reply correctly.
The fact that there has never been a stereo LP or cd release doesn’t mean it wasn’t...
North by Northwest. Has been ‘restored’ and part of the upcoming TCM Film Festival in the spring. I’m sure this showing will be followed by a 4K UHD release.
Yes, as I believe the restoration of a number of years ago was done in 4K . Kino has stated that they didn’t believe there would be a market for such a release.
I assume you made your own stereo version for the German Blu-ray as the Koch version I have is unfortunately mono. Thanks for clearing up the mystery. I do recall that on one of the early cd soundtrack albums from Screen Archives a family member of Jerome Moross is quoted as stating the music in...
It’s a matter of controversy. From readings over the years I believe The Big Country did in fact have a stereo track. I’ve also read that a collector had such a print. With that said I’ve never seen TBC in stereo. So ….
I’m aware that HG and AN were not pitted against each other in the Academy Award races. Just that imo the superior film didn’t win its contest.
Your removal of the opening ‘Harvard’ scenes intrigues me as I never understood where they fit in except to pad the running time. Joseph Cotton’s...
Also saw HG opening week. Probably day number 2. It only played 1 week roadshow and I believe it was at the Cinema1 in NYC . While everything you say about the work of the actors and behind the camera folks are spot on I totally disagree about the film as a whole. It was one of the most...
GStET opened at the Warner Cinerama NY on Feb 15 1965…at approx 225 minutes. I saw it a few days later. It felt very long. I read somewhere that this version survives at the Library of Congress.
I recorded TBW from the 12/24/22 showing on TCM. I would never have realized that a small bit of Grant playing the harp was cut without reading this thread…
They went with the best… Mitzi Gaynor was terrific in the role and is probably the best thing in the movie-except for the musical direction. Her audition which is on the blu ray is tremendous. I would have given her the role on the spot. However, I always wondered if Shirley Jones was in the mix.
Of course it would be great to have them all. As the visuals in Ryan’s Daughter are quite stunning. However, based upon WB’s lackluster celebration of their own 100th Anniversary with regards to 4K UHD leads me to conclude that they may go for the top 3 or 4 MGM classics and that’s it...
Barabbas opened in NYC at the DeMille Theatre as a Roadshow attraction. Sound was sensational. Had an overture, entr’acte etc. While the presentation was very good the film itself was not one of my favorites…
