So do I. Insofar as the Blu-ray may be the best home video source, it is a trusty old product for me. A product I've used several times by now. It's loaded with some nice bonus features, the audio may not be the finest product but it seems relatively faithful to the sound design of the film (in...
I know someone mentioned in this thread, but I'd mention Edward Cahn's 1932 Law and Order, a pre-Code western that could also function as a gritty crime film of sorts.
yep. I would also like to see Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, and Straw Dogs in 4K UHD, especially since we have 4K scans of their respective source material already. And maybe Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid in 4K, if it can be done.
But definitely The Wild Bunch, Peckinpah's great epic...
Glenn Erickson reviews this edition for Trailers from Hell.
If nobody posted this here, here is Glenn Erickson's positive review of the 4K UHD edition. Glenn probably doesn't know what he is missing with this release, which is not what a proper one could be (I have the old Blu-ray).
Thanks Robert for the response. I do love the Shane Blu-ray and think Paramount/Warner Bros. did a good job with that transfer. I would like a 4K with that master, if they choose to put it out, appropriately formatted for 4K UHD of course. The cinematography by Loyal Griggs on that is some of...
On another note, I have long wanted Shane in 4K. However, with Paramount’s apparent track record of not respecting film, I shudder. I think Criterion should do Shane, or some outlet that respects film and doesn’t want to make it “digital.”
Unfortunate. I hope Ford’s other 4K films (including The Searchers) will get more respectful treatment. I trust Warner Bros will overall do better with that title (though I do wish they will be more respectful, going forward, of original audio tracks).
Seven Women - John Ford
The Devils - Ken Russell (it's not on Blu-ray for a proper release of the director's cut)
PCU - Hart Bochner
Carnal Knowledge - Mike Nichols
I wish they would do a good 4k UHD+standard Blu-ray remaster with a fresh 4K scan of The Wild Bunch. It would be a purchase of mine. Same for The Searchers, which Robert Harris says can now be properly restored.
Thanks everyone for clarifying. I so look forward to full restorations of The Wild Bunch and The Searchers for 4K, now that we have the technology available to do what we couldn’t do then. I still like my Blu-Rays for both.
A question I’ve always had, with all the references to a 70mm print and all, even if the movie was shot on 35mm, do we have the original camera negative for the movie still to work from for a full scale restoration/scan?
Agreed. It already looks splendid as is. It, and The Searchers, and the other great Peckinpah and Ford movies, would look splendid in 4K.
These two, plus a revamp of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and a restoration and release of 7 Women, are what I’m most looking forward to seeing.
Though...
Hi everyone.
I’m AV, a new member and a fan of home theater related video stuff as a film buff and a law student currently.
Thanks for having me here.
Some of my favorite films are The Searchers, The Wild Bunch, Once Upon a Time in the West, My Darling Clementine - a lot of westerns. I also...
